Government spending is more beneficial than private spending

There is a myth out there that has been pushed by arch conservatives ever since the days of The Gimper. The myth is that private spending is better than government spending.

It makes for a great sound bite, but isn’t true. In reality, government spending is much more beneficial to society than private spending. The private sector has brought us travesties like the trillion-dollar ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, derivatives and a housing bubble that led to a multi-trillion dollar bailout, Enron, fracked water wells, the Exxon Valdez, genetically-modified organisms contaminating a large swath of the food supply and Bernie Madoff.

In contrast to all the negativity wrought by the private sector, government spending brings us many great things such as roads, bridges, schools, social security, Medicare, food stamps, man on the moon, government-supported research which leads to the creation of solar power and other alternative energy sources, and national parks.

The fundamental flaw in your point is that 100% of Government income comes from taxation of private spending.

Without private spending, government spending does not exist.
