DW I read the same article. I think the article was stating something like the December stats were 2.9% and that was the highest savings rate in a long long time. Then the article went on to state that this is one of the problems with getting out of the recession or depression or whatever you want to call this mess. That the consumer has to spend! Yay let’s all spend!!

February 15, 2009 at 4:42 PM #347374EconProfParticipantWe are witnessing patterns in the Obama Presidency thus far in which political expedience trumps all, hypocrisy runs rampant, and the share of government in our lives ratchets up on a permanent basis.
The campaign promises of ending politics as usual and reaching out to the other side consisted of having Pelosi and Reid write the 3/4 trillon dollar spending spree and ram it into law with little debate.
Having people take personal responsibility consists of bailing out FB’s, and, from the Treasury Secretary’s upcoming announcement, bailing out those who might be on the verge of missing payments. Personal responsibility also means appointing tax dodgers.
The bare-knuckle tactic of politicizing the Census Bureau, increasing funding for ACORN, and raising the % of the population who pay no income taxes (thus lessening resistance to tax hikes) are all aimed at solidifying big government in the long run.
Americans are just beginning to wake up to what hit them, but the damage is done.February 15, 2009 at 4:42 PM #347128EconProfParticipantWe are witnessing patterns in the Obama Presidency thus far in which political expedience trumps all, hypocrisy runs rampant, and the share of government in our lives ratchets up on a permanent basis.

It seemed like Obama had a chance to empower someone like Paul Volker, and if Obama really wanted change, he could have formed a commission of guys like Roubini and others. I was thinking maybe he could have gone way out of the box, enlisted some real minds to try to identify this monster, get arms around it, and root out the disease. Instead Volker has pretty much been outed, and the staff that Obama has, is nothing more then some Clinton retreads. It is simply a left leaning mirror of the losers Bush had.
——————-Very well stated, SDR. This was my hope as well. There is a very accurate and accesible record of those who got this thing right from the beginning (note this very blog), yet nobody from the blogging community or the “bear camp” has been tapped to help advise the current administration, at least not that I’m aware of.
I’ve been very disappointed with Obama’s appointments, too. Even though I had no illusions about the two-party system (which desperately needs to be broken up), I was hoping for something that at least appeared to be less beholden to the special interests (especially the F.I.R.E. economy players).
