Dana Pt is a beautiful and unique little piece of geography. I’d live there in a heartbeat. On a clear day from the patio at Cannon’s, you can see La Jolla. North up PCH are legendary beach towns. East over the mountains is one of the most scenic drives in SoCal on the Ortega Hwy.
Oceanside is ghetto.

Schools are good but the district has been in a bit of disarray for some time. Some neighborhoods have crime (minor) and overcrowding (major) issues, which will get worse if the Coast Hwy. and harbor redevelopment projects ever get going. It’s far from major employment centers. It lacks the cultural and culinary diversity of other parts of Orange County … you’ll have to drive all the way to Irvine for decent dim sum. And most of the housing stock is starting to show its age.
That said, the Capistrano Beach (92624) neighborhood would be a nice place to retire if you’re willing to wait for the right place to come on the market. Quiet, fewer stairs and steep driveways, near shopping and services.
Oceanside is vastly more affordable and closer to major employment centers, but I suspect you’d have a hard time finding something both affordable and desirable within a mile of the water. Leave it to us younger working folks π

By the time most people enter their late 30s early 40s they tire of the crowds, the traffic, the noise, the inability to find a parking spot, the small lots, and on and on.
There are a few quiet enclaves, of course, but you’re probably talking millions and not hundreds of thousands to buy ocean+peace.
