With all the talk about paying the mortgage early, we should also remember that we generally have fewer kids.

I remember sdrealtor and AN say that will leave their houses to their kids. Lucky kids, they houses will be paid off and the kids won’t have mortgages.

If they don’t like the houses, they can sell and trade for some other houses.

Could it be that our kids will be richer than us because we will be bequeath them more?

Or will medical bills break the bank?

Happiness is another story.

Anyway, his son became a lawyer and the great grandfather never left him, slept in the same room as my dad, read the newspaper every day, hung out and talked with the neighbors. And we continued to be lawyers. Now that i think about it a little more, i think we’re happier generation by generation. the jews from around the holocaust we’re justifiably freaked out, but as time goes on, we seem to have relaxed. Now, with this interbreeding I am participating, we’re barely jews. We’re not thinking we’re going to have to get up and flee cossack-equivalents every day, though in temecula, who knows what t he future will bring. I’d say I’m happier and more secure in my social place than previous generations, who thought it all probably more unstable than even i do…

I suppose for someone who is not in that boat they might perceive our future more pessimistically.

When I was a kid here in SD we used to walk from Clairemont through tecolote canyon all the way to the airport. We would bike to camp Pendleton and back. Not a lot of *that* is going on anymore…

Move to a tiny town in the midwest and you can live that life right now. Heck you could live it in Temecula right now. Buy a small house for $200K, eschew new cars every 3 to 5 years, no Flat panel TVs, multiple computers in the house and ipods for the whole family, payoff the house in 10 to 15 years. Heck, i bet you could even save for the retirement your Grand dad never could afford to. Sorry but I still dont see it.

fwiw, my grandfathers both fled czarist russia also. One had a fruit pushcart in NYC and lived on the poverty level. His duaghter (my mom) never went to college but got married and built a simple but successful life. my other grandafther had a storte on Coney island and loan shark business on the side (though he lent lots of money and never even tried to collect much of it as he liked helping people in need). His son went to college and built a successful life. Their children (myself and my siblings) have suceeded well beyond them with all possessing college degrees and graduate degrees. Generation by generation we have improved our standard of living also.
