Marion, you said:
“I just don’t want anyone asking or expecting me to support legislation for something I view as sacred and meant to be between a man and a woman.”
I’m sorry, but this law has nothing to do with the sacred rites performed in a church. It is about state contract law – Calfiornia marriage law. It is about civil rights. Mine, that is, not yours.
Amazing the sense of entitlement you people have. Do you have no shame?

May 19, 2008 at 7:06 PM #207843atrParticipantHi Mark,
Thanks for the slippery slope post. I kept thinking, but didn’t post, “slippery slope! slippery slope!” as certain arguments were presented. You explained that nicely.
I also agree that this is a basic civil rights issue, not a religious issue. I will vote along these lines, I will raise my child to believe that all are entitled to such rights, and I will contribute to the community in such a way as to hopefully ensure a future where these rights are granted to all.
It makes me profoundly sad to think of this country continuing to be a place where two adults can’t choose to be legally joined. My hope for those that disagree would be that you could simply allow others to live and let live, and that definitely means that they be allowed to marry. You don’t have to like it, but legally, they should be entitled to it. I don’t have anything more profound than that to say, and others have said it better than I could, anyway.

So basically you want it made illegal, so that you do not have to explain to your children that others have different beliefs than them? That is simply absurd. How do you explain jews, muslims, or people of other races to your kids?
