Colleges are warning students about what goes on down there now. One story that stuck in my head is a gun battle between cartel and soldiers that took place in a mall, tourists everywhere, a few miles from the SD border.
A recent investigative news show had the story of an American family kidnapped at gunpoint a few hours from the border. I could only handle watching it for 15 minutes or so, it got me so boiling mad. Calling them animals would be an insult to animals.
I went to Rosarito for the last time 3 years ago, and one of the local bartenders told us that it was dead even on New Year’s Eve.
Cancun seemed safe when I was there in ’08, but then there are all those bodies they found in caves, kinda makes you wonder…

August 3, 2010 at 8:42 AM #585722UCGalParticipantI haven’t been down to northern Baja in about 5 years… last time I went was for lobster in Puerto Nuevo.
I grew up going beach camping down there… My dad had just gotten into 4 wheeling and there were a lot of places to explore. He was doing trips down there until about 2006 both solo and with the Tierra Del Sol club.
Like Desmond – when I was younger I was going down to Ensenada when Corona was the house beer at Hussongs (before they had their own brand) and Coronas were not to be found north of the border…. and we’d camp on the beach. It was great – drinking age was 18, I wasn’t 21 yet… Lots of fun.
My husband and older son went down with my sister’s church to do some house building with YWAM Homes of Hope this past fall. No issues, but they were with a group.
Like many of you, I’d be nervous going down there now. Even my surfer coworkers have stopped going for their annual week long baja surf trips.

August 3, 2010 at 8:44 AM #585727UCGalParticipantI forgot to mention… My best friend is down on the Yucatan pennisula on her honeymoon. They’ll be heading to Mexico City next week. But she spent some of her teen years in Mexico City.
