Pri: Out of curiosity, when you say Kennedy was one of our greatest presidents, is this because you consider him to be, or you feel the general consensus is such?
I’d have to say the latter. Many Americans only have a superficial understanding of history and, superficially, Kennedy’s Presidency had some real high points: Cuban missile crisis, laying out the challenge to go to the moon, his speeches, etc. And, of course, he does get benefit of the doubt from the general public because of the assassination.
Also, his face made onto our money, and most people probably figure there’s some sort of standard for that.
In my (amateur) opinion, Kennedy would probably not be seen as so great had he finished out his term(s). Like you said, he did have a lot to do with getting us entrenched in Vietnam and, perhaps like Obama, his social agenda was probably too idealistic and impractical.

February 12, 2010 at 4:37 PM #512583DjshakesParticipant
Under the Republicans, the use of filibusters has grown exponentially. It’s a block-and-blame game for them. They’d better watch out because what goes around comes around.
The conservatives like to attack first; then they are surprised when there’s retaliation.

LOL, you site the Huffington Post and NPR as if it is objective writing.
You seem to be mistaking conservatives with wanting to hold onto the past. Conservatism is about limiting the amount of government in our lives..period. Our country was founded and thrived on this ideology. We wanted to escape the clutches of the monarchy and serfdom. When we established our own country with limited government we thrived and advanced mankind from tyrannical times that ruled for centuries. These advancements came in the ways of medicine, technology, etc. Prior to America what advancements were there? It isn’t a coincidence that this 5000 year leap happened when America was formed. You speak of progression through your progressive movement lead by politicians and government. It is backwards thinking. Just because it is now trendy for democrats to calls themselves progressives instead of liberals doesn’t mean you are going to get a different product. The bottom line we need republicans and dems out of our lives so we can continue to have true progression. You are married to one party and it is blinding you.

February 12, 2010 at 5:53 PM #512598ArrayaParticipantGood grief. Science, philosophy, industrialization or capitalism did not start in america. Not even close for science and philosophy(democratic ideals)
The term is derived from the Greek: δημοκρατία – (dēmokratía) “rule of the people”,[1] which was coined from δῆμος (dêmos) “people” and κράτος (krátos) “power”, in the middle of the fifth-fourth century BC to denote the political systems then existing in some Greek city-states, notably Athens following a popular uprising in 508 BC
The funny thing is how the word “liberal” has changed meanings over the years.
Liberalism (from the Latin liberalis, “of freedom”[1]) is the belief in the importance of individual liberty.
