Yeah, pretty much. I tried to pick up a book from the downtown library a few months ago. I swear 9 out of every 10 people leaving the library at closing time was a bum.
Yah, last thing we need are a bunch of bums off of the streets and reading books.
I agree now is not the time for a new library, but existing libraries provide a valuable resource for the less fortunate who might not be able to afford a laptop and cable Internet.

June 30, 2010 at 8:11 AM #573714allParticipant
people read in san diego? I thought we were just a bunch of beach bums.
jpinpb. This shouldnt be a surprise. Public sector is use to spending money they don’t have, tacking on a bunch of IOU’s and then having taxpayers cough up the difference.
Plus, image all the jobs this will create:) Lol…
Your snark might be misdirected. Public sector employees would prefer a new agency with another 100 paper pushers. Or use the money to keep the current librarians fully employed. Or reduce the pension deficit.
City employees did not vote on this. It is a work product of city leaders who found a way to line pockets of their business buddies with another $160MM.
Blame entrepreneurial spirit, not public employees unions.

But I’d rather see the existing libraries operating and functioning, rather than build a new one and cut all the hours on all of them. And cut more city services and paycuts.
But again, if they are bent on spending money they don’t have, and the choices are library or Chargers, then let it be for a library.
But knowing how screwed up this City is, I bet they do both. I guess if we’re going to go down, then do it all the way.
