Days where I want to leave early, I can’t, because after traffic, I’d get home not much sooner than if I stay at work 30-60 min later to miss traffic. Then there’s the dentist/doctors/etc appointments. Or if your spouse/kid get sick and you have to go home and tend to them. Not fun if you have to deal w/ traffic too.
I guess to each their own. If the OP can handle and want to deal w/ 45 minutes one way commute, then he/she can get some very nice houses for the price. Much better than anything around the 56.
I am with you here. It was a real pain when I did that. I am starting to remember better and better… time has a way of attenuating the more painful memories…
I don’t set *TOO* much store on schools, but it’s nice if a great majority of the parents are involved and care about the education, and they have some financial means to help that in a public school. In regards to private schools, 8-10K a year is out of the question, unless dire needs….
Thanks for making me remember how much a long commute at rush hour can suck!!!

March 9, 2010 at 4:55 PM #523521ScarlettParticipantMaybe we should just rent for the first couple of years of school in the general area we want to buy….especially if we feel it’s a big compromise in either commute or schools or home size or age (translates from price)…. to see if we really like it…. I don’t think prices are going up any time soon, and the rates won’t be go up much either….
I am inclined towards a short commute, but damn, I’d hate to buy a larger condo or apt. in UTC. there are not that many choices of 3+ bdr. I lived in the area for a few years and they are so not worth it in terms of construction (but worth it in terms of location)….I guess I’ll look more into UC beside UTC. Clairemont -I think many are just too old – more than 20 years old, no matter how well patched and updated. Size – not a major problem – single level helps a lot of course.

You’re welcome. I hated every minute of it when I had to commute. Especially when I have to check Sigalert everyday before I go to/leave work. With regards to school, go here: http://school-ratings.com/cities/San_Diego.html for API scores. Just for quick comparison: MMHS vs UCHS vs Madison HS(8 vs 7 vs 3). Challenger Middle School vs Standley Middle vs Marston Middle (9 vs 8 vs 5). There are a lot of elementary schools, so you can just check the map but in MM, one is ranked 10, 3 is ranked 9,1 ranked 8, and 1 ranked 6. Coincidentally, the area that feeds into the ranked 6 school is the worse part of MM.
FYI, they’re trying to get a new elementary school built in south west MM, corner of Flanders and Parkdale.
