I have heard from several people that the better school districts do not do a very good job with special needs children. Do your research, but I suspect you may be better off in the SD district, which means you can buy a beter house in a great neighborhood than you could for the same money in C.V.

March 29, 2011 at 1:45 PM #682157teacherSDParticipantI used to work in Special Ed for the San Dieguito HS District and I thought the program was very good. However, I think a lot of that had to do with the teachers who were there at the time.
Teaching Special Ed can be very draining and there is a lot of turnover (I teach regular ed now) so I don’t know if the programs are still as strong as they used to be.
The parents who were armed with knowledge, especially the ones who hired an advocate, were definitely accommodated and their kids were taken care of. The best thing you can do as a parent is be a vocal proponent for your child if you want the school to provide services for him.
I know your son is still quite a few years away from high school but that was my experience.

March 30, 2011 at 11:21 AM #682939MANmomParticipantMy son was in second grade when we moved back to SD and into Penasquitos. He has had an IEP since he was 4, had speech and learning difficulties, as well as some motor function delay. I am proud to say he finished speech in 5th grade, totally caught up. He still recieves services now as a 9th grade student, he has a special class at the end of the day called Learning Strategies at Westview HS that specifically targets his homework and understanding the subject matter of the day. He even has teachers assistants that attend class with him for math to help him in Learning Strats. We just discovered he has ADD, the innatentive kind, and is now medicated and doing much better. Had I known about the ADD earlier (they can’t tell you if they suspect it, which is a shame) I could have done something sooner. You are on the right track. I have been satisfied with his special ed, they can’t work miracles, you still have to advocate for your kid. PQ is a great place for families, is cheaper than CV, and I think the services have been adequate to good. I hope this helps.
