Sounds like you are in the perfect situation, definitely go for it.
By the way, that is bullcrap about being career suicide. For one thing, given the current recession it is no dishonor for being unemployed for 6-12 months right now. Secondly, I think you’ll find many future employers will admire and even be jelous of your personal pursuits. One year off is not going to kill your technical skills either. On the contrary, you may come back refreshed and more motivated than before.
Regarding Spanish, there are many good options. I recommend looking into Oaxaca, MX. I don’t recommend studying in the same place for 6 months. Maybe pick out a few different locations and go 2-3 weeks of school at a time so you don’t get burned out.

A good part of a year or more abroad is not necessarily out of the question with kids, mortgages or whatever. I’d like to live and travel abroad with the whole family when the oldest kids, who are a grade apart, are in middle school. The youngest would be in the 4th grade. The way I have been told and understand it, with home school abroad they don’t skip any grades.

By the way, that is bullcrap about being career suicide. [/quote]I’m thinking people see how little vacation time companies give and how they absolutely frown people taking anything more than 2 weeks at a time off.
I am current with the latest technologies in my line and I intend to follow IT developments closely even when I am away..thanks to the internet π Software Engineering is my first love and I am a superfast learner so I have no issues catching up.
I just have issues with employers who do not use logic to make decisions. Just having a gap on your Resume doesn’t make one unemployable. If I can pass a skills test (which most employers have anyways) then what difference does it make even if I took 2 yrs off? It’s just narrow minded…
