SD Realtor — The job location is in Carlsbad, near Palomar and El Camino. If there are good locations that are close to that, please let me know.
I appreciate all the comments. Orginally I didn’t want to rent since the rents are high, but not a tax deduction like mortgage interest. However, I think it’s very good advice to get to rent first and figure out over time where the best place to live will be. Doubly true in a market that is falling.

November 7, 2007 at 8:17 AM #96618BugsParticipantI’m going to take some heat for this but that’s the way it goes.
The San Elijo area of San Marcos is a 5-minute drive to your job location, maybe 10 minutes during rush hour. It’s a master planned community that’s well insulated from detrimental conditions. The prices there are equal to most of Vista. It’s not Carlsbad, but it’s actually closer to your job than the La Costa Oaks area of Carlsbad, which is located in the next valley to the south and has the same homes from the same builders for 20% more.
The home in Vista you’re looking at is a good 30 minute drive to your job and it’s all surface streets. If you’re going to spend that kind of money you mght as well spend it someplace that’s closer to work.

November 7, 2007 at 8:29 AM #96630ice9ParticipantBugs — San Elijo Hills sounds very nice, but like Heinlein said “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch”. Why is this area as cheap as most of Vista if it’s a much better location?

Amen to that. I don’t know much about North County, but I would gladly trade an extra 100K in home price and drive a beater car to have a short commute.
