The reason the Prius looks as it does is aerodynamic and space demands, primarily battery packaging.
The more efficient your engine the more the aerodynamics matter for extending MPG.
Prius is highly aerodynamically efficient and is remarkably spacious inside.
More conventional looking hybrids—modifications of existing vehicles—have a signifcant space penalty to accomodate the battery.

Why do I have to pay 30 cents a gallon more per gallon than regular gas up here in the States? If things get really insane I can dump peanut oil in it, about $5 a gallon @ Costco.
