You dont know what you dont know and I am not someone you want to go head to head with musically. My sister did wardrobe for many of the biggest names in music and rocknroll. Her ex husband was one of the biggest guys in set design/tour managment etc. I toss out a few of the many highlights but there are so many more that I can remember spent in NYC clubs seeing early punk bands.
My dad used to take me to see shows when I was 6 and 7 at the Garden State Music Fair. A tent set up in my hometown. It was the late’s 60’s and I remember seeing Jose Feliciano, Ray Charles and Little Stevie Wonder
Woodstock 94 – former BIL basically designed and put on the whole show. Had all access pass and partied with Chris Farley, Tom Arnold, Flea among others. Was on the stage when the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out covered in mud and little else.
Zoo TV-BIL was tour manager, backstage for many nights including the inital arena tour
Clash-saw 5 nights in a row in NYC at Bonds
David Lee Roth- was in his locker room post concerts for a few shows on his first solo tour and enjoyed many a Beck’s beer and other things with him
Rolling Stones- front row center, need I say more
Pearl Jam-Iguanas in TJ early 90’s
pearl jam/red hot chili peppers/nirvana concert at del mar fairgrounds before they hit it big in early 90’s
The Band – CBGB’s
Ramone’s – CBGB’s
REM – in my college cafeteria back in 1981 or 82
Bon Jovi- kinda lame but my sister made his first stage costume when he was 16 and sneaking into bars to play. More times than I can count backstage
Same for Def leppard
Vague memories of Clapton (many times, jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Aerosmith (another BIL’s cousin was their long time manager and basically saved their lives), Scorpions, Van Halen, Mellencamp, Billy joel, devo, Big Audio Dynamite, Joe Strummer solo, Pogues, Dead kennedy’s, Sex Pistols, Dead Milkmen, Nils Lofgren (pre-springsteen solo shows in bars), Iggy Pop….
Springsteen – Countless shows many of which were in dive bars
I leave you with two final bands:
I have seen Lou Reed and the VU more times than I can count in NYC. I own everything he’s ever done including Metal Machine Music on vinyl.
I saw my first concert at age 5 in the King of Prussia mall parking lot- The Monkees
