Another consideration – Mira Mesa. As AN has stated, most of the elementary schools over there are performing well. And the middle school and high school are as good or better than Stanley/UCHS. It has a reputation that is less than stellar – but the test scores of the past few years are totally in conflict with that reputation…
In other words – people avoid Mira Mesa because they think the schools are subpar – but they’re actually very good.
Commute would likely be similar to LJ as from Clairemont.
Here’s an example… 500k, over 1500sf, canyon property.

UCGal, not to nitpick but MMHS has been performing decent for at least the last 11 years (API score only went to 1999). According to http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ap/apireports.asp, back in 1999, when the API test started, it was ranked 9 with a similar school rank of 10. For some comparison, in 1999, SRHS also has a rank of 9 but similar school rank was 5, LJHS was ranked 10 w/ similar school rank of 8, UCHS was ranked 8 w/ similar school rank of 6. I graduated before API score start and even back then, the recurring theme was, we never get enough money compare to other schools in SDUSD because our test scores were one of the best in SDUSD.
commute from West Mira Mesa to North Parking at UCSD would take me between 10-15 minutes, depending on the lights. UCSD North Parking to downtown LJ is another 5-10 min depending on lights. So the commute would be between 15-25 minutes.
