svelte, I totally agree that the hype about HS “test scores” is BS and not telling the whole story. Most Sweetwater schools (SUHSD) get an (undeserved) bad rap by out-of-area folks, too, even being called “ghetto.”
I have neighbors and friends with kids who graduated from Hilltop, Bonita Vista, Sweetwater and Chula Vista High Schools, whose kids are either students or graduates of UCSD, UCLA, UCB, UC Davis, Cal-Poly, Stanford, etc. Some have advanced degrees and two are currently doctoral candidates.
If buyers want to pay out the nose for MR, HOA and poss. $200K+ more for a flimsily-built house with a tiny lot in a “bedroom” fire-prone area (A/C needed) because they think it is in a better “school-attendance area,” then more power to them. I’ll stay close-in and use my 2.5 tanks of gas per month and spend others’ “commuting-time” at the Y.
I’ll say it again, IMO success in school has everything to do with the kid and his/her family and almost NOTHING to do with the school. ALL PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOLS IN CA MUST FOLLOW THE SAME CURRICULUM IN ORDER TO GRADUATE SENIORS. [end of rant]
