Seriously, this is one of the best books out there for new parents.
A large group of our friends were all having babies about the same time, ~10 years ago, and the first couple to have a baby used this book as a guide. It worked so well for them, they recommended it to the rest of us. Everyone who used it had happy, well-adjusted babies who slept through the night by around 12 weeks.
When other people saw how our first baby behaved, they told us we were “lucky,” and that we would eventually have one that would need to be rocked to sleep for hours, or driven around the block every night. We’ve had two more, and every single one of our kids slept well, and woke up happy — they’d sing and play until we went in to get them in the morning.
One thing we did do differently — we co-slept for the first few weeks, and kept the baby in a bassinet in our room for the first few months. Didn’t co-sleep with the first, and learned my lesson. If mom nurses, it’s just sooo much easier to have baby right there. Of course, people need to take precautionary measures WRT blankets, pillows, heavy sleepers, etc. Other than that, we followed most of the book’s advice — followed the eat, play, sleep schedule, and let the kids sleep on their own after the first few months, didn’t pick them up every time they cried, etc.
Not only are the sleeping tips helpful, but the recommended “mommy and daddy” time is key. If mom and dad are happy and relaxed, the babies/kids are much more likely to be happy and relaxed.
