It’s not that intelligent and well-read are bad things. I admire that, sincerely.
But facts alone aren’t enough. What is lacking in so much of the discussion of today’s events is sense of proportion. In the past ten generations or so we’ve had:
– A Civil War that literally split the nation in two, and killed hundreds of thousands.
– Two world wars that killed millions and devastated Europe along with a few other parts of the world.
– A flu epidemic that killed more people than one of the world wars.
– A (real) depression where thousands starved.
– A Cold war that literally could have destroyed the planet.
And these are just a few tidbits from the American part of the story.
And yet there is a “this is the big one” tone to so much of what we are reading here and elsewhere.
“Lord of the Flies?” Hard to take it seriously.[/quote]
Pri: So you know, my comment was tongue-in-cheek. Also, I don’t think “this is the big one” by any stretch of the imagination. However, I do believe we are seeing a fairly epic shift in the economies and economics of the Western world, and one that will have far reaching consequences.
These little assholes running around London are not political protesters, they’re cosseted, entitled welfare state babies and we’re seeing and participating in the end of post-WWII nanny state policies.
