Just as commutes can get worse they can get better. The improvements to the merge, carpool lane addition and widening of 5 have made improvements to the drive along the coast. Telecommuting has also helped. It is an easier drive now than it was back in 1999 for me when I still did it everyday. The 5 widening will continue and the chances of traffic getting better are as good as them getting worse over time.
