I have mixed feelings and thoughts about this sort of thing. On the one hand I don’t like the guinea pig aspect that you bring up or the certainty that profit motive will be part of the inevitable and sometimes criminal or “evil” mistakes made. On the other hand I think it has potential not too far off from other human “advances” in science and industry.
I personally think there is the possibilty that human experience is destined for other parts of the Universe …or for a much different earth and interaction with the earth, at the least. What is being learned about the modification of food organisms may work out as a useful for this purpose. We may even have to alter ourselves some day to survive. I do understand that with or without these far fetched notions, individual personal and societal challenges within the long existing conflicts of the human experience are provoked by the changes…even modest ones.
