John: I had a CO in the Army who was a bible thumping hardshell Baptist. This guy loved God, and America, and killing people. I never understood how he could reconcile his faith with the killing (I couldn’t and still can’t).
I consider myself a Goldwater conservative and stray perilously close to libertarianism at times. I do lament the fact that Repubs have been hijacked by the Religious Right, especially people like Robertson. I find Pat Robertson to be a dishonest, racist, irregilious homophobe. The fact that he presents himself as a man of God is utterly reprehensible and immoral. That he is also considered a pillar of the Republican Party shows how far we’ve fallen. Separation of church and state exists for a reason, and, while I am a Catholic, that has nothing to do with my being an American.
As far as the Dems go: They have been hijacked by the Red Diaper Wing of the 1960s counterculture movement. I go to great lengths to point out that there is a difference between “liberal” and “liberalism” and “left” and “leftism”. The PC movement, the attempts by the Left to crush academic freedom and free expression, and identity politics; all are products of this movement to bring America into a bright new Socialist future. That probably sounds a little alarmist, but you can see it manifestly in the media, the schools and universities, and the body politic at large.
I do agree wholeheartedly with gandalf that things need to change and change substantially for this country to move forward and do so from the center (or, better yet, center-right). That’s why I said the Republicans need an enema.
I’d support the Dems, but they’re all like gandalf: Birkenstock wearing, Volvo driving, “Mother Jones” reading, tofu eating, free-thinking East Coasters. Not that I ever stoop to stereotypes or anything. 🙂
