I’d love to see $10/gallon gasoline. It would cause short term pain, but eventually most of us would get used to taking the “school bus” to work just like we did when we were kids.
It’s not like I (or most anyone else) has to drive to work every day. We just do it because taking public transportation to work is such a hassle. Double the price of gas and many, many more people will make that sacrifice of getting up a half hour earlier to catch the bus or the train or whatever. There will be a short-term shortage of mass-transit vehicles, but the free market will fix that soon enough.
More expensive fuel/energy leads to a much better society in my opinion. Much less waste, pollution, and conspicous consumption and more focus on things that actually matter.
