I think people forget how black the south is relative to other areas. I remember staying in Durham for a couple of years, and I worked out in Raleigh, and these areas are pretty well integrated. In fact I kind of felt like Durham was a bit too much, and had I decided to move my family down from Ohio, was thinking more like Cary or Morrisville (also much closer to work).
