I think Dana Point is an absolutely wonderful place to live. It’s not without its issues though. Schools are good but the district has been in a bit of disarray for some time. Some neighborhoods have crime (minor) and overcrowding (major) issues, which will get worse if the Coast Hwy. and harbor redevelopment projects ever get going. It’s far from major employment centers. It lacks the cultural and culinary diversity of other parts of Orange County … you’ll have to drive all the way to Irvine for decent dim sum. And most of the housing stock is starting to show its age.
That said, the Capistrano Beach (92624) neighborhood would be a nice place to retire if you’re willing to wait for the right place to come on the market. Quiet, fewer stairs and steep driveways, near shopping and services.
Oceanside is vastly more affordable and closer to major employment centers, but I suspect you’d have a hard time finding something both affordable and desirable within a mile of the water. Leave it to us younger working folks 🙂
