For me I’d do Julian/Cuyamaco or Palamar. I think I’d use it more if it’s 90 minutes away.
My husband’s boss just built a “cabin” near Julian. (It’s a very nice 2 bedroom house in a cabin setting.) I think they plan to retire full time to it – but for now they spend every weekend there. As you can imagine, an architect building his retirement home – it’s VERY nice and has really nice details.
Things to consider with So. Cal potential cabin locations – you need to plan for fire. You need to have it extremely fire hardened on the outside, and have sprinklers, etc. In the cabin the boss built it’s got metal shutters that come down over the windows as well as a cistern fed sprinklers under the eaves. Because they wanted energy efficiency they boosted the quality of the insulation and windows.
