20% of Hispanics identity as whites. That’s because among hispanics, white is higher status. All you have to do is watch telenovelas to see that. Subliminal and overt racism within Hispanics. I have friend who says he’s Italian, but I know he’s Mexican because of his last name; and he pretends not to understand Spanish. He lied about his background and can’t escape the lie.
My observation is that immigrants of all races who are hoomers or older and came earlier, tend to side with Whites because Whites were historically higher status. Survival instincts cause humans in ingratiate with the higher status/power.
Since globalization took hold in the 90s and other countries became wealthier and had access to the same consumer products we had, the attitudes changed. Immigrants who come here with an education and some money don’t view Whites with the same deference of the past. They see themselves more as global citizens who take advantage of global opportunities (more like an American expat who works in Brazil or China).
American Whites better learn the ways of a globalized world if they are to thrive. Discontent won’t solve anything.
People’s feelings about race, power, status can be exploited easily. Whenever there is a shift in politics and economics that upset the status quo people feel discontent, never mind that they should be happy because the tides lift all boats.
This is the ultimate bullshit excuse people make. The loudest complainers of h1-b’s are also the ones complaining the loudest about illegal aliens.
When the hell is someone who is looking for a job cross shopping between a high paid tech job and a low skilled low pay day labor job? People are just pissed and want to an explanation of why they are falling short.
OK fine, take away all the foreign students… Let’s drop affirmative action and reverse quotas and let things be completely based on merit for all us citizens. If that means 60%+ of top rank med school and engineering schools end up being Indians and Asians with u.s. citizenship, so be it. You really think Trump support ers would be OK with that? Nope. Of course not. You know what Trump supporters really want? Crudely said, affirmative action for non colored people who can’t get on based on merit by quota limiting anyone else that does better.
