We took the same approach. Didn’t shop at Ikea, but bought the cheapest Jerome’s kid furniture we could find. It survived their entire childhood but had plenty of war wounds to show for it. They way I figure it, it kept me from yelling at them about destroying nice furniture and let them be kids, and helped them by learning the lesson if you don’t take care of your stuff, pretty soon you’ll have ratty stuff.
It really didn’t even look that bad after 15 years, but definitely didn’t look new.
