The rumor I heard is they already signed a lease for those Nokia building. They want to be close to QCOM. SD will be where they run the product teams. Sunnyvale is where they’re currently running their feature teams. So, they’re basically concentrating in CA.
If true, that is a rare piece of good news for the San Diego tech industry in a long time. Any idea if this actually means that people move here from elsewhere + new hires ? Or are they just moving folks that they currently have around Sorrento Valley to Scripps Ranch?
My information is limited but this is what I’ve heard/know (we’ll find out by next year since their lease supposed to start beginning of 2011). Majority of the MOT employees in SD belongs to their government and set top box division. Mobile only have about 100-200 (not sure what the current number is after the layoff and people leaving). As I’ve said earlier, their lease for the Nokia building suppose to start in 2011. When they’ll fully move their headquarter to SD is unknown. SD MOT is currently responsible for driving product. There’s no feature development there. Features are being done in Sunnyvale. I heard that at the very least, they’ll move all the HR/accounting/etc. here. I’ve also heard they’ll be moving their R&D here too, or at least making the main R&D location be here. It make sense for product to be driven out of here, since any bugs related to QCOM chipset can be resolved much faster/cheaper here. I’m sure they’ll offer their engineers in Libertyville a chance to relocation here. It’s much cheaper for them to do that than do a layoff there. I’m not sure how many people they’ll hire here. Only time will tell.
Motorola own their Sorrento Valley buildings. But they’re leasing the Nokia buildings. My speculation is that the mobile devices will move out of Sorrento Valley into Nokia building and the rest of MOT will stay in Sorrento Valley. Their new mobile devices division (the new MOT) will be headquartered out of the Nokia builds and the spun off MOT will be in Sorrento Valley.
