Doooh, aren’t there any SFRs in these areas that are sub-$300K? Why do you think you would be underwater if you bought now just because some of your relatives made poor decisions in the past with their properties? Do you have the ability to fix a property in one of these areas which needs repair/rehab so you can acquire it for a good price??
And you never stated WHERE you would want to move to and put down roots if you left San Diego County.
