It is not that simple. It is not like you have an option to pay less for a particular house, but then you decide to pay more. You need shelter and you are going to pay the property taxes either directly or through your landlord proxy. You can move to a less expensive neighborhood, but that does not address the fact that you are paying more for the communal services than the next guy.
I accept that as a fact of life, but it is fundamentally unfair.
