Not true. I’ve been frequenting the pound on Gaines St for years.
You don’t need any letter from a Vet to put down a pet. You just tell them what the condition is and why the pet needs to be euthanized.
They take the pet to the back and when the deed is done, they will show you the body.

Well, I am glad you have good results. It still stands that many private vets are commendable and reasonable.
I once had a dog from the pound that was a bad fit because it was supposed to be a companion dog for my retriever. Instead it dominated the other dog in every way. When I took it back I got scolded big time even though I wasn’t asking for adoption money back.Yes, the person was rude. I probably have black mark in my file somewhere for returning that dog. I don’t want to deal with them anymore.
Private parties handle adoptions and my current dog comes from one. The private adoption people really wanted to know that the new dog was thriving, and as far as I can tell, would have wanted it back, would have demanded it back, if there were serious adaptation problems or risk issues for the dog. The dog worked out fine.
Maybe my dog was lucky to be in the foster home it was in. The lady handled the dog and adoption very well, even though it was clear that it was inconvenient to her to keep the dog until she trusted me. Maybe my case was a fluke at Gaines and not descriptive of the culture at the pound.Maybe as you say Joan Kroc’s generosity brought changes in that.
