Stress? I’m not saying that other jobs don’t have stress, but it’s a different kind of stress. Being shot at or running into a burning building is a different kind of stress than the kind you get from trying to make a deadline or make X amount of sales. Not to mention the emotional damage caused by the death of friends/colleagues in the field, etc. Seeing charred corpses, abandoned crack babies, etc. PTSD?

True story. I have a friend that was a history teacher for a few years in a suburban high school. He quit to become a police officer because he thought it would be less stressful. I asked him about it a few years later and he said that being a cop was considerably less stressful than being a teacher. Just one guy’s story.
Again, I can understand firefighters dying younger than the average person – to some extent. But I can’t see it for cops. Don’t most cops work their entire careers without having to draw their guns? For the vast majority, it’s a career of traffic tickets, breaking up fights and false alarms.
