    I work for a local public agency and work closely with our govt affairs deputy. With the looming possibility of the state folding or being forced into bankruptcy, there are rumors milling around the state capital right now that Arnold has teamed up with both Republican and Democrat assembly leaders to propose between a $.20 and $.40 per gallon of gas tax increase for the next two years. This tax would be

    1) charged by the gallon, not the price like a sales tax (Similar to the STA tax that is currently administered)
    2) Would fluctuate in accordance to gas prices. In other words, the higher the price of gas, the lower the tax would be. From what I heard, the tax would have a cap. Once the price per gallon of gas hit a specific price, the tax would be null.

    This would help offset what is now a 12.0 billion dollar state budget deficit.

    So from what I am understanding what is being proposed is the following:

    – Increase gas tax
    – Increased DMV tax
    – Tax all vehicle maintenance

    While at the same time, we’re going to be sinking millions into roads? So let’s get people out of their cars and away from driving, but sink more into our street, roads and hwy infrastructure. And by the way it looks, let’s start subsidizing Toyota, Nissan and Kia (since there won’t be any USA automakers left).

    I still think this city can a successful high speed inter-city commuter rail system (forget the trolley it’s too slow and filled with vagrants). We need commuter rail – bullet train type that extends South to Otay Ranch, North to Poway and Escondido and north up the middle of I-5 to Oceanside. Create a grid network of connecting high speed rail connection going east-west that connect to major employment hubs like Sorrento Valley/Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Downtown SD, UTC. Price it a little higher than the local system so all the freaks aren’t riding on it. Just don’t let SANDAG be in charge. Once they know they have the money to do such a thing, they’ll blow it on studies and vacation time.

    Will someone at voice of San Diego please investigate SANDAG already! What a waste of tax payers dollars.

    I thought the Republicans in the state assembly wanted nothing to do with new taxes. Nothing. No new gas, new car, new repair, new sales, new anything taxes. They want the whole hole in the budget taken out of the budget. Are they becoming irrelevant next year? Why would the drawl the line this year and not next year? Are they being bought off the same way they were in the house with the 700 billion bailout? I dont doubt you, but there is a road block right now in the assembly that I just dont know how they are gonna break it.

Are they being bought off the same way they were in the house with the 700 billion bailout?     Yep, in that case I wouldn’t mind if they spent that 20-40 cents on speeding up new freeway lanes, such as the I-15, 163 to 56. (plenty of unemployed people who would love to work) Traffic would be reduced, pollution would go down.

    Yep, in that case I wouldn’t mind if they spent that 20-40 cents on speeding up new freeway lanes, such as the I-15, 163 to 56. (plenty of unemployed people who would love to work) Traffic would be reduced, pollution would go down.
