Ok, since flu added an Ok, since flu added an opinion to the poll on the BMW 1 (which I agree with), and “opinions” were requested, I’ll risk some abuse and throw mine in (although I think any hate mail supports my point).
The first thought that comes to mind when I see someone in a boxster is that they couldn’t get the car they really wanted. Why drive around with a second best sign handing on the door? When I see a TT I think “cool car”. Sorry to hear about the accident with yours.
I have an M5, but considered going for the Camero for nostalgia reasons. However, I’m not sure it won’t fall apart in a few years so I’m waiting a bit longer to see how it holds up.
So I would go TT, Mustang, Mazda. A year ago I would have been laughing to see Hyundai in the list, but I know someone who owns one of those coupes and they really like it – Hyundai has come a long way.

You can’t go the s2000 route. Oh please don’t go there. Those things sound like sewing machines on steroids, plus there’s plenty of rice boys that like to do stupid sh!t to those. Plus you got to deal with all the civic rice crowd that will be ripping of emblems from your car….

S2000 is a fun car. S2000 is a fun car. Underpowered by modern standards, but still one of the best handling cars for the money.
Assuming a budget of 30-35k, you can do a lot better than 04-05 Corvette. I have a fairly loaded 06 which I bought for 30k a year ago. Today you can get an 07 for that money. The interior would be quite a bit nicer than 04’s. A lot more power than S2000, more practical in many ways, but not as go-kart-like.
You might be able to get a used Cayman on that budget.

The issue I have with M3’s is that a lot of people drive one who shouldn’t be. More for status than anything else. Second, the E46 M3 upkeep is steep. The current 335 is pretty close to it’s performance for the e46, so it would probably be better for that.. Jpinjb specifically said maintanance is a concern.
Although I’m not big fan of them it’s been proven the CTS Spec V eats M3’s for lunch. I’m sure a lighter vette will do even better.

Trunks can appear deceivingly small. I did more than one $200 Costco shopping trip in my old S2000. Elise is around 4 cubic feet and that’s approximately the volume of a standard shopping cart.
But it certainly limits what you can do. Vette would be better if you need to carry bulky stuff, because there’s no wall between the trunk and the cabin (once I managed to bring home a 6′ bookcase from Ikea in it), but even it does not go far enough.
By all means, go test drive one. Try to fit your stuff in the trunk.

Don’t let the normally aspirated Toyota engine bother you …It’s such a light car, that the non-turbo will just be fine…However, Lotus will be loud..Not too much sound insulation. And if you are tall, it will be cramped with the top on…I think you should go find one and sit in it and see if you can deal with it and fire it up…That is, if you’re still not sore all over…Then again, if you can get in and out of an elise and not in pain now, then you should be fine when you are well π
The other thing you’ll want to do a quick check on is insurance rates. I don’t think TT and the Z4’s insurance isn’t quite as much as say Camaro/Mustang 5.0/Vette/Boxster…Then again, rates tend to be much lower for women than men, and are much better if you are hitched versus single. Don’t know the Lotus is gonna be a bundle…Although insurances rates shouldn’t really sway your decision that much, just make sure it’s not something ridiculous.
When you mentioned Vauxhall. It reminded me two other cars .Saturn sky or the Pontiac Solstice…And you might still be able to find either new discounted heavily. I think there is a Saturn sky redline version too…
I have not driven either, so don’t know how the driving dynamics are on it. If it’s you’re cup of tea, the nice thing about getting sky/solstice is it’s heavily depreciated since both brands went under and since GM’s don’t hold value to begin with, it should definitely within your budget.
BTW: you aren’t going to get much quieter than a TT/Z4/boxster with all that insulation they put in their car. I took apart an a4, s4, tt coupe, and a z4 and it amazes me how much sound insulation they put in there.
You can also eliminate the Ford mustang, because they intentionally route some of the engine noise into the cabin.
Suffice it to say that new owners of the 2011 Mustang 5.0 will not immediately feel the need to go out and buy a set of aftermarket mufflers. Ford has outfitted the new Mustang GT with a generously piped high-flow stainless steel exhaust system with huge chrome tips. Engineers tell us they spent untold weeks and months in the sound lab getting rid of what we donβt want to hear, and adding more of what we do. A sound pipe even transmits induction sound from the intake manifold directly to a drum-head like diaphragm in the firewall, giving the driver a healthier dose of that throaty V8. A device that owes itβs origins to the Eco-Boost engine program, we have to say that it actually works.
fair enough, but I owned an M3 E46 until very recently and had no problems with it at all and just sold the Vert at 50K on a 2004 and ran like a top. I also had it as a CPO with 100% maint and warranty coverage which I think is a must. it was an excellent handling daily driver, averaged 20 mpg, and frankly the body style I prefer to the dull 335. performance wise, the 335 is certainly up to the M3, but again, I think the 335 is a ho hum body style design and having driven one as a loaner, is not as fun to drive handling wise.
I am more interested in the new GM/Ford products competing with the German vehicles. Frankly, I think companies like Toyo/Lexus/Pissan are waayyy behind having the interesting body design/style along with the performance of BMW/Benz/Audi and the American cars, who would of thought?

Ok. I’ve spoken w/a few Ok. I’ve spoken w/a few people about the Lotus. And I said on my feedback thread that I don’t need a race car, but I would like something that will move if I need to. As tempting and even doable a Lotus would be, I’m hearing it’s like a go cart and not a daily driver. More of a race car. The dealership network is not so good for Lotus. Not a common car. Good and bad. I hear parts network is not the greatest. Sure Toyota motor, but still a lot of proprietary parts.
I really do appreciate the feedback. I saw a Cayman today. I like it better than the Boxster. But that is exceeding my budget. I’m not considering a Sky. flu talked me out of the Honda, which didn’t take much.
flu – good point on insurance. I’ll have to inquire about how much it will be for any new car I get. The insurance on the TT was not bad at all. Gosh, that really was a good car for me and handled very well, got the speed if I wanted it, just the right size and wasn’t really a chick car, like the Z4.

As for the “no white, silver or black” comment, I agree that there are waaaay too many of those colors on the road right now.
However, I always evaluate what color looks the best of the particular car I am buying and select the color accordingly. Doing that, I’ve ended up with cars of every color – except brown. I never end up with brown cars for some reason.

I have a couple of Vespas. I sold my LX 150 for a vintage VBB 150. Then got a 1966 SS180. Then got a 1965 SS180. They only made about 30k total of the SS180. Just got a rare German model 1971 90SS w/turn signal, which they only made a couple hundred, and put a 130 kit in it.
Today sold the VBB. Don’t take the VBB out much and the others are extremely rare. Can’t part w/them yet. Still hurt to sell the VBB. It was a 1961. Though they made a lot of VBBs, the only ones you see around for sale are junk Vietbodges.

To really scramble my brain a little more, I saw a house I really want. It’s a little out of my reach, but w/some sacrifice, I think I can do it. One of the sacrifices would have to be no car payments. That’s about my luck, you know. I had my TT paid off and I could still be driving the car I love AND try to get the house.
I think this latest BMW suggestion of flu is about all I can afford π
What a financial quandry. I don’t really want to sell any of my assets. Though they’re paid off, costs me nothing to hold them, I wouldn’t be getting top dollar in this market. Sorry bulls. Sometimes I wish it really was a recovery, but I’m not seeing it w/my holdings.

jp, you live in California jp, you live in California for God’s sake. Traffic in PB is stop and go. It’s not like you’re driving on the freeway from Houston to Galveston, TX. So why would you need the brute power of a muscle car?
You need something that fits the image of a California Girl. A California Girl is sophisticated, yet relaxed and beachy. She eats fusion cuisine and is in good physical shape. She’s active outdoors but also likes to party in the city.
She’s environmentally conscious so she wouldn’t drive a big engine just because she can. But she’s sporty so she would want something that handles and performs well. She’ll more likely to drive something turbo-charged than a 5-liter American.
I vote for a German (or Lexus) convertible with a manual transmission.

For crash protection SUV would be the way to go, though I’m not sure about rollover safety. But for sports car type, that Camaro does seem safer than most. But that TT held up against a F150. In my mind, there are just some cardinal sins when it comes to car purchaes. I’m sure some will disagree here.
1) A V6 Mustang.
2) A V6 Camaro.
3) 911 convertible, M3 convertible.
4) AMG ML63, X5-M, or X6-M, Cayenne Turbo or supercharging/turbocharging any CUV/SUV beyond stock. What the hell is the point?
5) Any BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Audi S/RS with a slushbox (dual clutch doesn’t count…A real slushbox )
6) Any Audi without Quattro (Fwd Audi???…Go get the damn BMW)
7) Any BMW “ix” (Awd BMW??? Go get a damn Audi)
8) Describing a Mustang/Camaro/Vette/Porsche in the same sentence was “gas mileage”. Go get a damn Prius.
9) Any street car with a spoiler sitting higher than 2 inches from the trunk lid, with the exception of the STI and Evo.
10) Sports cars with chrome rims together with drilled rotors and carbon fiber hood for weight savings.
11) A camry or accord with a “sports package”.

Mazda is partly owned by Ford so you can sorta say you are buying American. Don’t know your age JPINPB, but if you or hubby are over 50 then the Miata might be a little hard getting in and out of,it’s really low to the ground which is what gives it the great driving/cornering ability. Of course if you and hubby are in great shape/do yoga regularly then it shouldn’t be a problem. Pluses-easy to park in small spaces, good gas mileage, can go fast if you want to,upper end comes with Bose sound system(gotta have a good sound system if getting a convertible). Just my opinion!

All mercedes have electrical gremlins and all stopped having free service during first 4 years of ownership. Also, it’s ridiculous how much they bill out for routine maintenance. Recently, someone I know was quoted $2000 for replace 2 rotors + pads on a non-sports package car (ie stock brakes, no brembo/upgrades/etc) I ended up buying all 4 rotors and pads for about $400 and threw in a brake bleed that took about 1 hour to do. With all due respect, Mercedes are junk. They aren’t what they use to be. No wonder why a good portion are leased. You don’t want to deal with them after warranty. The new E coupes look alright, but going a coupe route, I’d say the A5/S5 is more interesting frankly, but again one’s willing to deal with VAG reliability.

Ok, I meant every model is known for there unique issues (not physically every one)
S and SL are the worst offenders. I had a friend that had an SL and in the first year sent the thing to the shop about 15 times…And funny thing is he couldn’t lemon law it because they were all separate unrelated issues (all electrical). It went downhill from there. A few folks had issues with the CAN bus on E series. And my brief encounters with the C class was less then stellar too. Stupid sh!t like a power drain from a short in the power seat control modules would drain the battery, and the cost $$$$ per seat. “Known issue” on the W203 C series.

Some data-mined factoids.
I went to speedventures.com and pulled all results of their Buttonwillow clockwise track days since January ’09, and put them into Excel.
Median times for M3’s on street tires were 02:19 (E36), 02:13 (E46), and 02:17 (E92), with rather thin sampling (the track saw a total of 7 different E92 M3 drivers).
These are the medians for common types of Corvettes, for drivers without evident engine modifications:
C5 Z06, racing tires: 02:10
C6 Z06, street tires: 02:10
C6 Z06, racing tires: 02:04
Other common cars:
S2000, street tires: 02:10
S2000, racing tires: 02:05
1999+ Miata (all models, all tires): 02:17
Evo, racing tires: 02:06
Evo, street tires: 02:11
WRX STI, all tires: 02:13
G-35: 02:16
RX-8: 02:16
350Z (all models, all tires): 02:12

The first thought that comes to mind when I see someone in a boxster is that they couldn’t get the car they really wanted. Why drive around with a second best sign handing on the door? When I see a TT I think “cool car”. Sorry to hear about the accident with yours.
I have an M5, but considered going for the Camero for nostalgia reasons. However, I’m not sure it won’t fall apart in a few years so I’m waiting a bit longer to see how it holds up.

I don’t see jpinjb tracking the car that much, though an elise is quite fun…

Trunks can appear deceivingly small. I did more than one $200 Costco shopping trip in my old S2000. Elise is around 4 cubic feet and that’s approximately the volume of a standard shopping cart.
But it certainly limits what you can do. Vette would be better if you need to carry bulky stuff, because there’s no wall between the trunk and the cabin (once I managed to bring home a 6′ bookcase from Ikea in it), but even it does not go far enough.
By all means, go test drive one. Try to fit your stuff in the trunk.

I can’t get the turbo Lotus. If I got a Lotus, it would be used and not turbo, but I checked out this video of Lotus and Vauxhall and it’s impressive. So now the question I have, is the Lotus loud? I’m getting the impression I won’t be able to hear myself think. That will be a deterrent for me. I’m excited at the thought of getting a Lotus, but I need my hearing. Also, it is really much smaller than I remember. It’s like a sardine can.

I think there is a Saturn sky redline version too…
http://autos.yahoo.com/2009_saturn_sky_red_line_ruby_red_special_edition/
I don’t see jpinjb tracking the car that much, though an elise is quite fun…
fair enough, but I owned an M3 E46 until very recently and had no problems with it at all and just sold the Vert at 50K on a 2004 and ran like a top.

Saturn Sky Pontiac Solstice do not have a trunk AT ALL.
BMW is a hell of a good car but I won’t pay the price for repairs. Under warranty you can’t beat them. Car and Driver top ten cars forever.
M3 rides too rough for my taste. You don’t need that level of performance unless you race it. We got a Z06 Corvette because we do race it. For normal street driving, I never use 90 percent of its capability.

Ok.
Again, please, please, please don’t get white black or silver. Revolt against mediocrity.
LOL. Whatever I get, it won’t be black. Jury is out on white. Not my first choice. I don’t mind silver. I liked my silver TT. When I was at Chevy, there was a charcoal gray Camaro that caught my eye. The red Cayman I saw sure was pretty.

Unless you buy a convertible, a Vette does not have a trunk! We don’t take ours to Vegas because we wouldn’t be able to see out the back window with our luggage in the hatch!

Yeah, I know convertibles
Yeah, I know convertibles aren’t what you buy for safety. But they sure are nice in sunny CA. That VW is really nice. I saw it and it reminded me of Audi, and sure enough, listened to the video.

Since it’s her money, I went for the Boxter. If it was mine, I’d go for a Mazda 3 (not the turbo).

Flu…
You have me conflicted in my answer of the great American Muscle Vx.
Nothing is as macho as a V8… But there were no V6s many years ago producing V8 like horsepower…
Case in point… Mustange… Came in a 289 or 302 Cubic inch power plant.
The Vs alone make MUCH more power than any of these classic plants…
But there is the lil devil on the right shoulder that says “No! America Muscle has to be V8!”
I would say if it is a daily driver the V6 is fine.
Weekend assualt vehicle… V8…

I like the Mazda Miata
I like the Mazda Miata MX-5(or whatever they are calling it these days), but it does drive like a go kart. Just my opinion!

the C-series is junk, but the E series is very nice, seriously, and there are good deals to be had…
or, go for the Vette Z06, you will impress the teen crowd and the 50+ yer old white guys at the same time, what a demographic!!
Porshce, very nice, but yer gonna pay and they all look the same, sigh..
otherwise, your car choices are way too scattershot and you need to focus more
I’ll be picking up an M5 for a ED in June myself. π

C6 Z06: 7:49
M3 E92: 8:05
M3 E46: 8:22

Some data-mined factoids.
I went to speedventures.com and pulled all results of their Buttonwillow clockwise track days since January ’09, and put them into Excel.
Median times for M3’s on street tires were 02:19 (E36), 02:13 (E46), and 02:17 (E92), with rather thin sampling (the track saw a total of 7 different E92 M3 drivers).
These are the medians for common types of Corvettes, for drivers without evident engine modifications:
C5 Z06, racing tires: 02:10
C6 Z06, street tires: 02:10
C6 Z06, racing tires: 02:04
Other common cars:
S2000, street tires: 02:10
S2000, racing tires: 02:05
1999+ Miata (all models, all tires): 02:17
Evo, racing tires: 02:06
Evo, street tires: 02:11
WRX STI, all tires: 02:13
G-35: 02:16
RX-8: 02:16
350Z (all models, all tires): 02:12
1999+ 911 (all models, all tires): 02:08
