This topic comes up once and a while and was discussed again just a couple months ago. For the benefit of newer people I will sum it up.
First, I do not have the time or desire to moderate the forums, so there effectively is no moderator.
Second, a lot of people like the political conversations. I’m not one of them — I think they are boring and pointless and yes, a bit out of place here. So I don’t read them.
This way the political arguers get to have their fun and it pretty much has no effect on me. (I do the same thing btw about people talking about specific properties in Carmel Valley or other areas where I have no personal interest in ever living — the point being that there is a whole variety of topic types that i do not read.) I just skip them. It’s just not that hard, especially since the political stuff is in its own OT forum along with other OT stuff.
Non political arguers have the option to skip it. To ban political topics on the other hand would leave the political arguers (admittedly a minority) with NO option.
So the optimal solution is to let the political arguers have their fun, to ensure that no threadjacking (from non-political to poltiical) takes place, and to have non political people skip those topics. It just doesn’t seem like that big a deal to me to not read certain topics. And for the people who think the ratio of political to non political topics is too high: then post more non-political topics, or only browse directly in the housing etc forum topic “rooms”. It just is not a big deal — especially condsidering that election talk will drop off a cliff within a couple months.

The only suggestion I would make is that you create a separate “div class” for Political Discussion Groups. Split the “Active Forum Topics” into two div classes: “Active Forum Topics” and “Political Forum Topics”.
Give the Political Discussion Groups their own area on the right side of the screen. Right above Sponsored Links.
When I look at the Active Forum Topics on any given day and see that nearly 50% are related to Politics it’s just not worth my time to see Topic Headings that are really veiled propaganda. I suspect that both Democratic and Republican parties marketing machines involve finding popular web sites and then overruning them with political propaganda. At least that’s one of the tactics I would use to leverage the social networking web sites if I were running a marketing campaign in this day and age. Not too mention the obvious youtube videos. My personal opinion is that these “discussions” are more propaganda than they are debates.

No, I disagree. If you want a political blog, then go find it. It should not be here. People did not voice their concerns over this issue.
SDlookup, for instance, does not allow political posts. It keeps it strictly to real estate, which is would piggs should. Some of the political posts on this forum are downright stupid. Are you 18?
I can’t help but disagree. In my 22+ years of voting, this has got to be the worse ticket ON BOTH SIDES that I’ve ever seen. I’ll be writing in someone else as I can’t stomach voting for either one.
It kinda makes you wonder if these are the best 4 people we can find out of almost 300 million. But I guess seeing how the press and the libs have come out with guns blazing against Palin that it’s not too hard to see that most of the people who we’d actually WANT to be in office would never subject themselves to the political microscope….

As a liberal, I thank you for writing someone in. The more conservatives do that, the more likely my boys win.
Honestly though, I agree with svelte. These are some of the most interesting and thoughtful candidates I have ever seen. While I am never sure that analyzing taste (even political taste) is a good idea, I am curious as to who of past candidates you would prefer. Can you clarify that for me?

This will all be over in 2
This will all be over in 2 months. This to me is a great place to debate with people of all other thoughts and beliefs. That’s hard to find on a political website, because they are all just big echo chambers. At least here at pigginton, there can be a respectful debate with the “other” side, without preaching to the choir or being stuck in the echo chamber. Yeah we get the occasional trolls, but it’s a lot less than on the big political sites.

As of this minute, poll
As of this minute, poll results are very AGAINST politics on Piggington. But to read this thread it would appear most are FOR it. You noisey should think what you are doing to this site.

I suggest one reason
I suggest one reason political topics are so alive and well on Piggington is that the participants here represent all types. We’ve got libertarians, lefties, and everything in between. I suspect the political blogs represent only one viewpoint and they largely agree with each other. Nothing is more boring than talking politics with someone you agree with.
What counts is whether you can still get your real estate fix here. You can if you just pick and chose.

They’re alive but they’re not
They’re alive but they’re not well.
The politics are polarized and they basically are shouting matches of sound bites and misrepresentations trying to color the candidates.

And you should skip over and not post on political threads.
Econprof (whom I seldom agree with) has a point. This is the most diverse and interesting group of people I have had a chance to chat with lately. Most political blogs are a damn site dumber and more one-sided than this. I am totally including those that agree with me.
I did not come here to have political conversation but got sucked in and its enjoyable. Participation is totally at will.

No, I disagree. If you want a political blog, then go find it. It should not be here. People did not voice their concerns over this issue.
SDlookup, for instance, does not allow political posts. It keeps it strictly to real estate, which is would piggs should. Some of the political posts on this forum are downright stupid. It dilutes the site from what it should be about – real estate. I wish the moderator would take a more active role in deleting those posts.

I agree with you, plus its pretty much impossible to leave politics out of discussion on the economy, especially during an election year.
Hopefully we can keep envolving here on the tone of the discourse. I believe we all seem to want to get along better now then at first.

Plus, how exciting is real estate now? I think most people thought this market would drop off a lot more a lot faster and then snap back but it appears to be still years away from coming back. Until then we might as well talk about something interesting.

You really think that? I think McCain on paper is an excellent candidate. Obama doesn’t have the resume but neither did Hillary. Biden has a good resume. Palin is a governor and good looking too so you have to consider her qualified to run.(g)

As long as the comments are
As long as the comments are not blatant and tiresome partisan broadcasts, especially the character assassination type, then politics is wholly relevant to what is one of the most momentous economic crises in recent times.
