And does it matter if they live in America or are Americans? If so, why? Why should I care about someone in New Hampshire more than someone who lives in another country?

Ok, just to clarify, ten otherwise healthy people who wouldn’t die in the near future but for your decision to keep your dough. Actually, let’s make it ten random piggingtonians. Seems easier to care less about people more distant from your social circle

Most of us are ok with other Most of us are ok with other humans dying to avoid a material change in the comfort of ones life.
Probably we are all fine with 1 million randoms dying to avoid a 90 perc loss. Even a million painful deaths involving torture … Camels and needles notwithstanding, people we don’t know or care about yet can wind up on the slag heap of humanity and we will still sleep well.
I do think however, fewer would be ok with killing 1 million randoms for a 9x gain in wealth. I’d be a definite no on that, but I’d guesstimate conservatively 25 percent of my fellow Americans would toss entire other states into the incinerator for those gainz
Still, my thesis that most of America can drop dead so long as we do well is, I think, a basic truth. Similarly, fuck the environment too. Based on this, I believe we are doomed.

There will be no curiosity, There will be no curiosity, no enjoyment of the process of life. All competing pleasures will be destroyed. But always— do not forget this, Winston— always there will be the intoxication of power, constantly increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever.

Americans esp xtians love Americans esp xtians love Putin, at least a decent chunk.
Intoxicating.
My charitable donations are at an all time high $75 a month to deerpark monastery in escondido. However I go there often, and they give me a free lunch. And I love them. Not much sacrifice. More to assuage my guilt at benefitting so much from them.
Plus $1 annually to my alma mater.
This is one of those situations where it might be better to be negative net worth, since you can be relieved of 90perc of debt and save lives.

just anecdontally, evangelicas around here think Putin is doing G-d’s will. i think there’s respect, admiration and he’s doing what he needs to do, like trump among half the nation here.
there’s a theory among christians that G-d uses seemingly bad men to do his will, so you cant really judge them, like, say some puny piggingtonian.

Scaredy, you are wrong that Scaredy, you are wrong that Russia is popular with conservatives or evangelicals.
92% of conservatives and 94% of liberals have negative views on Russia.
The share of conservatives who see Russia as an enemy versus a partner is 72 to 3, for liberals it is 78-2.
The tiny Putinist element in America is about equally fringe right and fringe left.
The pro-Russia fringe left figures include Glenn Greenwald, who is a quite famous journalist and Jill Stein, who won the Green Party presidential nomination.

From the poll: “and on this topic, Democrats and Republicans largely agree, with 72% of Democrats and 69% of Republicans describing Russia as an enemy.”
So about 30 percent of America sees Russia as not an enemy. but if asked the question, if you have to choose between the destruction of the ukraine and the death or dislocation of its people, or higher inflation for the foreseeable future, I think most americans will say, welp, its probably G-d’s plan that ukraine disappear.
But my views should be ignored or heavily discounted. I despise Russia and Ukraine for how they treated my ancestors. Hate that whole region. I love the USA, a lot, in spite of my bitching…
But I adore Russian lit., Esp loved Ivan Turgenev’s short story FIRST LOVE. Just read it yesterday. It’s perfect. Except for one little antisemitic remark…
“a Jewish expression came over his face”.
That dude , the polish count, turns out to be a total asshole …i wonder if it would be taking too many liberties with the translation process to substitute the word “sly” or sneaky” or “calculating” for jewish in the above sentence….
But what a brilliant work of art. 10/10. Perhaps I do have a Russian soul, even if a Jewish expression sometimes comes over my face, too. Frequently, in fact. Maybe always?

Hume’s point is that even the most obvious moral judgments are not rational and subject to proof, not that he approves of extreme selfishness.
But it is funny that he anticipated that joke about 230 years before it was told. I’m not sure if he deliberately wrote that it a way that could be misunderstood. Probably not given the context, but at that point in his life he may have been open to some negative attention.
The best place to see Hume’s high literary talent is volume 1 of his History of England. All of it is good, but the first book covers more ground faster and is more interesting and entertaining.
