BTW Veritas, be careful posting stuff about the Enemy Belligerent Act. Only an Enemy Belligerent would complain about such an obviously useful, helpful, necessary, and of course patriotic piece of legislation. It’s the natural next piece of the puzzle after Patriot Acts I and II and the Military Commissions Act from the Bush II years.
Here come the fun 1-way airplane rides over the ocean just like in 70s Chile and Argentina. Blindfolded skydiving from 10000 feet with no parachute and your hands and feet tied will be the next “Extreme Sport” popular with anyone who complains about anything that TPTB don’t want to hear complaining about. With or without the bill, the With or without the bill, the president has always had the authority to detain and “question” anyone thought to be a serious threat to the United States.
The problem arose under Bush where there was blanket use of the authority to grab anyone that might be thought a threat by anyone in our security hierarchy. The need/right to “interrogate” a high value target with direct knowledge of an impending terrorist act has always been tolerated, and in fact necessary.
Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy Reagan all used the authority under the radar. Bush/Cheney beat the authority to death.

I think Brian is an agent provocateur, and a young one at that. You can’t take him too seriously, and largely because he’s neither consistent nor constant in his views or beliefs.
However, he’s fun to spar with. Ideologically, left and center-left posters like SK and afx and arraya are more well-informed, honest and capable, but Brian does occasionally take some well placed shots.

Wow. I’d say “well done”, except its laughable on its face and especially given the complete and total lack of facts. This is like a red herring, strawman, reductio ad absurdum all rolled into one.
And, ultimately, so what if Surveyor was an Asian-American Christian Fundamentalist? Is that some sort of disqualification in your eyes? I’m a German-American Catholic. Does that render me somehow incapable of tendering or advancing a substantive and well-reasoned argument?

Brian: Hold on a second, there, Bunky. As you’ve opined, and repeatedly so, Obama being black DOES matter and quite a bit.
His ethnicity has been cited as a root cause (by you) as to why many white Americans (most specifically Tea Partyers) either attack his policies and/or reject his policies. You’ve also held forth that his color creates fear in whites, along with their sense of loss of “their America” (the America that the white folks used to run, I’m presuming).
So something, not nothing, right? You can’t simultaneously advance and reject a theory, can you? Not logically, anyway. You play the “fear of a black nation” card, but casually dispel it by opining that Obama’s “blackness” (that quality that disenfranchised whites fear so much) is an irrelevancy. Methinks you believe that Obama’s blackness is equally as important as Surveyor’s Asian Christianity and, more to the point, informs and drives him just as Surveyor’s does.
Or am I wrong?

Unfortunately Brian this observation is fairly indicative of your analytical skills, or lack thereof. I never professed to be being a Christian fundamentalist and I do not hold any of those views. I am actually agnostic.
All I did was indicate how bigoted you are towards christianity when I noted that Christians never believed in a flat earth, and provided documentation of it, despite your belief that Christian did believe in a flat earth. You had been using that idea as proof of Christianity being a backward thought process. However, it was clear that you knew nothing about their beliefs.
That notation does not make one a Christian fundamentalist. It makes one a historian.

It’s true that I don’t know much about Christianity besides what I see on TV. My comments reflect my own views of the Christian right.
Christianity evolved over 2000 years. But I’m more focused on the Christians who are politically active in America today.
I know that:
* They believe in intelligent design.
* Are against birth control.
* Are for home schooling.
Perhaps my views are distorted and may prove wrong. But I don’t see how my views are different for someone’s interpretation of future real estate prices; or whether unauthorized immigrants should be legalized.

Brian: So if one doesn’t adhere to the above beliefs (intelligent design, birth control and homse schooling), one isn’t a Christian?
I don’t believe in intelligent design, but I also have issues with Darwinism. I was taught that empiricism should guide your thinking, so there really is no such thing as “settled science”, only an on-going discourse and debate (much as what SHOULD occur in politics, but doesn’t).
I don’t believe in home schooling, and feel that Catholic education (at any level) produces some of the best academically prepared students in the country. Neither of my children is home schooled, by the way.
I do break with Catholic teachings regarding birth control, but I understand the foundation of the doctrine, even if I don’t agree. My point here is that one can be far more open-minded as a Christian than you realize, or, more importantly, ACCEPT.
Again, this is not only bigotry, but blindness. You castigate Christians for their supposed backwardness and ignorance, yet you display these self-same qualities yourself.
I could take a handful of the more conservative, right-leaning posters on this forum and completely deconstruct Leftism, but I sincerely doubt you’d listen or pay attention. And that inability speaks far more to your closemindedness and ignorance than it does to your opponent’s.

Not all Christians do, but playing devils advocate here on ‘intelligent design’:
How do you explain wierd ‘coincidences’ like virtually all living things using mitochondria to generate energy by processing ATP, conversion of glucose/sugars to ATP, DNA being used to specify a species characteristics with RNA being used for cell replication, water losing density when it solidifies(about the only compound that does – and lucky for us because the surface of the earth is 60% water) – amongst many others-I could easily belabor this point. In some ways, too many coincidences occurring without some ‘external intelligent’ interference.

Hey Brian,
Are you aware of the “Enemy Belligerent Act of 2010? This should be chilling to all civil libertarians:
On March 4th, Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman introduced a bill called the “Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010” that, if passed, would set this country on a course to become a military dictatorship.
The bill is only 12 pages long, but that is plenty of room to grant the president the power to order the arrest, interrogation, and imprisonment of anyone — including a U.S. citizen — indefinitely, on the sole suspicion that he or she is affiliated with terrorism, and on the president’s sole authority as commander in chief.

With or without the bill, the president has always had the authority to detain and “question” anyone thought to be a serious threat to the United States.

However, he’s fun to spar with. Ideologically, left and center-left posters like SK and afx and arraya are more well-informed, honest and capable, but Brian does occasionally take some well placed shots.

* Are against birth control.
* Are for home schooling.
