Here’s what I don’t get. I Here’s what I don’t get. I am fully aware that I could not do anything these guys do.
– If I tried to catch an NFL qb’s pass, the football would pass right through my dainty fingers and lodge itself in my shattered sternum.
– Any attempt on my part to tackle any of these guys would end with me begging for the sweet release of death as I sprayed geysers of blood all over the perfectly nice astroturf.
– If I were to try to long snap, I would probably miss the kicker 9 out of 10 times.
But here’s the thing: the ball would go in the air. It would fly over the kicker’s head, or maybe 2 yards to the left… but it would get airborne.
So I am not trying to be a jerk here, I honestly don’t understand… how did the ball not even get airborne? How does it just roll on the ground — twice?
Perhaps one of you more football-savvy gents can help me understand. Again, not trying to bag on this poor guy (a local, no less) any more than has happened already. Just trying to understand the mechanics at work.

Rich: Long snapping is Rich: Long snapping is actually an art and really good long snappers are worth their weight in gold in the NFL (as became painfully apparent when Oakland’s first stringer, Condo, went out after sustaining a blow to the back of the head and his replacement immediately stank up the joint).
Remember, the punter is a full 10 to 15 yards behind the line of s scrimmage, versus 5 to 7 for a QB in shotgun or 4 to 5 for a QB in pistol formation. Add to that distance the difficulty of getting the ball right about waist high on the punter, so that he can position the ball properly for the punt
All in all, a thoroughly thankless job and one few players can do really well, which was also on gruesome display in Monday night’s game.
Boy, I remember when the Raiders were the masters of Monday night. Of course, I also remember ABBA.

Allan I was thinking of you Allan I was thinking of you the entire game.
Rich you gotta remember that you have to snap the ball and you have gap responsibilities to help one of the gaurds out. Then you have to remember your lane assigment based on the direction of the kick.
Last year the Chargers had two blocked punts by the Raiders so this was some sort of odd poetic justice. I will say that the punt that the Chargers blocked as opposed to the two bad snaps actually was a good snap. Someone didn’t cover up a lane….
All in all the Raiders lost the game more then the Chargers won the game due to special teams, a few offsides calls, and some off the wall play calling. Oakland controlled the first have with the exception of a long pass to Meachem. They should have had many more points on the board.
Rivers didn’t turn the ball over nor did the Bolts fumble. The defense was okay but in the first half was fairly weak. They had a good third quarter though.
Niners look tough this year. Unfortunately I think the ponies are gonna roll through the afc west unless peyton gets hurt.
