I was thinking about starting I was thinking about starting a forum topic regarding how well the Padres were doing even before the All Star break, somehow I held off not wanting to jinx them, but really because I feared an epic collapse would happen, like now.

Yes, only it’s the Mariner’s Yes, only it’s the Mariner’s Curse. When Ray Kroc sold the Mariner’s and bought the Padres the Mariner fans put a curse on the Padres. 🙂

As a life-long, diehard Cubs As a life-long, diehard Cubs fan, I can only scoff at your tiny little curse. Bow before the Cubs’ curse, as yours is not worthy.
Seriously, though, the premise is that San Diego is the largest city not to have won a championship. While San Diego may be a large city population-wise, that’s mostly because of its widely-drawn boundaries. The metropolitan area that includes the city is really what determines the size of the market. San Diego is the 8th-largest city, but it is the 17th-largest metropolitan area. It’s tough for a metropolitan area with 3 million people to compete with areas that have 6 or 9 or 12 or 20 million people.
