A federal tax credit and state rebate would bring the electric car’s price to $28,500 for Californians. Volt’s main rival, the Nissan Leaf, will start at $32,780 before subsidies. Both go on sale later this year.

We’re not in the market for a We’re not in the market for a new car right now. We’ve discussed getting a plug in hybrid or plug in electric as our next car.
I was an early adopter of the Toy. Highlander Hybrid. I love it and don’t regret the purchase, 5 years later. But hindsight being what it is… I should have waited till the 2nd year. There are a few glitches in those first models. (I bought the 2006 model in June 2005 – the first weekend they were available.)
Hopefully waiting will work for us in other purchase timing. If we get a plug in car, we’ll get solar panels… but we don’t want to get solar panels till we get a new roof – which is at least 5 years out.

With the subsidies, it’s probably smarter to buy a new electric car than a used one.

Someone I know (who reminds Someone I know (who reminds me a lot of brian…) has been posting on Facebook that he’s getting a Leaf. He goes on and on about how he’s going to be a non polluter and save the plant, ad nauseum.
He was railing against the oil companies a few months ago and decrying the use of ALL fossil fuels.
So I found it kind of laugh out loud funny when we was recently posting about where he was going to take his surfing vacation in the south pacific. I guess his concern about his carbon footprint doesn’t extend to his frivolous jet travel for vacation.

That wasn’t me…. but the jet is flying already. Adding another passenger won’t make a difference.

Looks like gas will be around Looks like gas will be around for a while. I don’t have to worry about my car becoming obsolete.
Hyundai Motor Co. announced Wednesday that it has set a goal to boost the fuel efficiency of its U.S. vehicle lineup to an average of 50 miles per gallon by 2025.
That target would put the the South Korean automaker more then 40% above the 35.5 miles per gallon level that U.S. government is pushing automakers to reach by 2016.

Considering that the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $31,500 — after a $7,500 federal tax credit — is relatively pricy for a compact car, Talati said he’d expected sales to have been boosted even higher by GM’s incentives.”
