Hello, gdcox, I have insomnia and am in San Diego, where it is the middle of the night. I hate the gas prices here, but you HAVE to have a car. My workplace is 14.5 miles away. I can do that in 15 minutes at 6:30 in the morning, and about 20-24 at 4 p.m. The bus would be about 2 hours and the trolley…I don’t know…except that I’d have to walk about two miles, which I can’t because of physical problems. Congrats for living in a country with good mass transit. We don’t have that here, mate. Oh, and all three of us in my household drive small Japanese cars. Is this crisis affecting our lives? You betcha.

Both of my parents went to Chicago Teacher’s College (don’t know what it’s called now) and then to U of Wisconsin/Madison for their masters…all on the GI bill. She had been a WAVE during WWII stationed in Coronado and would not marry my dad unless he agreed to move to San Diego. He caved, and here most of us are. She’s gone now, but, ancient as he is, my dad still loves going back to the Midwest when there’s a funeral or whatever (I know that’s kind of macabre, but WTH, he’s 88).
We used to take a road trip back to Chicago every summer, which gave me a healthy fear of tornadoes. I remember Nana herding us all into the basement. She didn’t have to try too hard, our being exposed to “The Wizard of Oz.”
In SD, though, we have the wildfires, which are just as frightening. My best wishes, girl.

Yep, you’re probably right. Even with just a BSN/RN she’d make $70K for starters in the Bay Area. I personally prefer NPs over doctors…in my experience, they always spend more time with you. Because of my health insurance, I use Sharp here in San Diego. I went a week ago to a new doctor and was called in by a woman who said, “I’m Jane, Dr. BlahBlah’s nurse.” While questioning me, I blabbered about my daughter becoming a nurse and I asked “Jane” where she’d gone to nursing school. Can’t remember what she said, but it was the health care equivalent of DeVry (sp?). In other words, she was not a nurse, she was a nurse’s aid or whatever. This led me to believe that Sharp is being cheap or can’t attract RNs. Jane was perfectly competent, BTW.
