StradivariusParticipant
I was told by the chef at Ruth's Chris that the best place to buy meat is Costco. I've gotten a lot of good meat there, and also from Whole Foods but they're quite expensive. I typically wouldn't buy meat from the Asian markets.
No Costco membership. Maybe someday when we have a garage to store our extra junk. Somebody recommended Whole Foods to me the other day for corned beef (and he keeps pretty kosher), so I guess the meat department there is quite reputable. I'll give it a try next time we make wontons. We've also heard good things about Iowa Meat Farms.

StradivariusParticipantThe shopping carts are beyond disgusting. I don't think they ever washed them, and I've seen plenty of janitors use them to hall away garbage early in the morning only to return them to the cart lines in the stores without doing anything else.
Ick. Fortunately I've never used shopping carts there mostly because it's always been too crowded to navigate with a cart. It's much easier to grab some pickled cucumbers and leave as quickly as possible. But I'll try Zion next time!

StradivariusParticipantThis thread is awesome. Only having lived in SD for 1.5 years, we have been missing our Philly Chinatown restaurants. I have had some decent Thai here (Spice and Rice in La Jolla) and Sushi (Sushi Ota). Shanghai City was pretty good but not stellar for me. We may also venture out for dim sum (I have unfortunately been cursed with a shellfish allergy) once I get a new epi-pen.
Ranch 99 doesn’t seem any dirtier than the Chinese groceries I used to frequent in Philly or NYC. My husband is a little scared of the meat department, though.
Thanks for all the recommendations!
