While all that you say is true, I have heard feedback from parents that your peers and the parent volunteering at the school makes a lot of difference too. If my kid wants to form a group at his school for an olympiad or FLL (lego league), but does not have peers interested in the same or parents who are interested or knowledgeable to volunteer in those areas, then my son will be pulled down too as a result. Those are the kinds of things I am looking at. Considering that parent involvement is going to be there as a given, we are conflicted between 4s vs CV. More of the activities he is going to be involved in are closer to 4s. We prefer hotter weather vs coastal clouds all year and we are getting a better sqft, bigger backyard, his friends etc in 4s and hence slightly leaning towards that vs CV.
serendipity4ParticipantWe are looking to rent or sell our current first home (suburbs) and move to a home in 4s ranch (most likely) or Carmel Valley (2nd option). We are looking for highly ranked schools (elementary through high) and proximity to lots of kids activities/amenities etc. Selling our first home is not a requirement to buy a new bigger one. Last winter to early spring, there was a slight drop in the market before things picked up again starting this spring. Even something like that would help us save 50-100k I believe. So no one expect a housing drop anytime soon? 🙁
serendipity4ParticipantHi,
Our home is assigned to EB Scripps in SR, but we have heard that Dingeman is better in terms of STEM/GATE/seminar etc.
Is that true, does it make enough of a difference to move our house to get Dingeman?
Also, how would Dingeman elementary compare to elementary schools in 4s (stone ranch/monterey ridge) vs carmel valley elementary schools?
We were thinking of elementary in Dingeman (we like SR location/proximity to a lot of things we are close to) and then middle and high school in carmel valley.
Thanks!!
serendipity4ParticipantBUMP!!!!
serendipity4ParticipantYes, commute and overall hotter in 4s/DS is my main concern. Looks like for elementary school it wont matter much which area, SR or 4s..good!
Are summer camps available in SR too? Any good recommended ones?
serendipity4ParticipantThank you all, for your valuable comments!
Ok, few more questions. Is after school daycare easier to get into in 4s/del sur than SR(more limited availability, I hear). That would be important for us, with both working. 4s has schools that are walkable to, a big plus, especially if we have parents visiting who can pick/drop them and kids wont have to go to afterschool when grandparents are visiting.
Is quality of afterschool and kids camps/extracurricular classes better in 4s/del sur. For now, I think we would rule out CV since we will get less sqfft for the same amt.
serendipity4ParticipantThanks, well I am talking about commute to Sorrento Valley/UTC(via miramar road) takes just 15 mins from our house in SR during our work hours. Whereas, from Del Sur/4S it would take longer, ~25-30 mins, as we have seen from our friends’ commutes. I currently working in SR itself, so its really close.
CV is quite close to Sorrento valley. I heard from friends who stay in 4s/del sur that api schools are higher there marginally and newer schools and facilities, hence better. Plus, with lots of more higher income people in those areas, better coaching/academics, I dont know if its true, but its what I heard.
SR schools have choice program and hence influx from Mira Mesa and other low income areas. I dont know if it matters, so thats why I am asking here, to clarify. Also, some friends told me that extracurricular and coaching classes are more abundant in 4s/DS areas as are the quality of montessori/preschools in the area.I know of residents who moved from Stonebridge to 4s because of this.
Basically, more higher income families prefer 4s/del sur over SR for this reason, if they can afford it.
Also, schools are mostly walkable from several homes in 4s/delsur area but not the case in SR.
We are in no hurry to buy as our son in not yet school going age, we are just trying to figure out options. We can go upto 1mill if we find the right house and everything else fits.
serendipity4ParticipantThanks. We can afford all these areas..our budget is upto 800k at this time. We are just trying to determine which is better overall.
In 4s,del sur lots of homes are walkable to elementary schools/parks and that is a huge plus, not so in our current home in SR, our assigned schools is EBS.
Older homes in SR but closer and no melloroos. Still so confused. I really still dont know why 4s/del sur schools are considered better than SR schools?
