“San Diego numbers are just too pretty” – do you mean we’re faring better than most?

And yes, I am willing to fix up a place.[/quote]
Both areas are nice, it’s just a matter of preference. We lived in New Scripps for many years, sold our place, and are now renting in Old Scripps while we look for a new home.
Old Scripps has the nice Eucalyptus forests, but I would say only about 20-30% of residents have really kept their places current. There are quite a few old 70’s homes that look it and need a coat of paint.
New Scripps, being built more recently, looks newer as a result. A bit more like a standard tract home neighborhood, but the landscaping is spotless overall, and you can eat off the streets.
I think if you toured 5-6 homes in both areas, you would immediately know which one fit you better.

I’ve lived here almost 10 years. Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions. The community vibe is fantastic and everyone is down to earth.
Plus you can commute anywhere quickly. I’ve timed door-to-door trips and 20 min to La Jolla, downtown, even OB are frequent.

Yes and yes. SD got hit by the dot-com bust but 100k for a senior programmer was about the same back then as now. Although looking at your figures I bet if I did the math on total comp I could buy a 10% increase. But that would still mean salaries haven’t even kept pace with the woefully-understated CPI. ($90k in 2000 is $112k today, a 25% jump)
Louis Vuitton… hahaha. We have paid-off cars and shop at Target. But a large chunk of my income goes to savings… guess I’m old-school in that way. It’s tough trying to be fiscally responsible in our current credit-orgy economy. Other people spending 100% of their income pushes prices of everything to stupid levels.
