“The nice part about being a pessimist is that you are constantly being either proven right or pleasantly surprised.” Unknown – but it sounds like Mark Twain
That sounds like a cruel joke. ‘Em Texans should docus on their own druggies.
What a difference 50 yrs makes. Interesting fact pattern etc. with the “Marihuana” Tax Act.
njtosdParticipant
If people want do-gooder shits like FlyerInHI running their lives, they can move to Iran.
Then again, maybe I misunderstood — does “get riding drug users” mean that you like to “ride” drug users?
And – another ray of sunshine from spdrun. You must be a hoot in person.
njtosdParticipantI particularly liked the one referring to the condescending “friendly reminder”. We’ve had one woman in our area who was passing out “friendly reminder” flyers to people who were waiting in the fire lane to pick up their kids after school. Apparently at one point if physical altercation ensued and either the flyer distributor or distributed was arrested. She also was very upset about the language being used by middle schoolers at Panera.

njtosdParticipantOr, if you are a “fast forward” type you can try Cranial Electrostimulation. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry/201712/what-is-cranial-electrostimulation
The author is a clever writer and Harvard instructor (psychiatry). Her mention of the “dudebros” made me think of a lot of Piggs who I won’t name. Her blogsite is here https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evolutionary-psychiatry
Fascinating stuff and I’m totally in agreement on her most recent post about magnesium – with teenagers I am happy to have any anti-anxiety advice I can find.

people who think about shit too much tend to have worse returns, i think.
Agree with you. But also people who don’t think enough.

I think it’s a blend. Humans have a natural inclination to learn, but for most of history important decisions had to be made within a split second. I think it is important to learn as much as possible and then try to stop analyzing and assume that what you’ve learned has gotten absorbed into your intuition. Warren Buffet is known for this. Both my husband and I were enthusiastic about investing in Ford in 2008 when it was at $1.50 (I’m from Detroit, he is obsessed with everything automotive). Our investment advisor was against it and so we didn’t. It’s gone up 800% since then.
As a hobby I buy vintage items and sell them on an e-commerce site. I made some bad buys when I first started but now I pretty consistently can sell for 3X what I buy for – often more and I haven’t lost on more than a handful of items in the past few years. I used to have to read up a lot, but now I can tell pretty much just by looking at things, even without knowing a lot about them.
One of my resolutions for the New Year is to become better educated on investing, take the returns from the e commerce site and see if I can develop some level of intuition when it comes to investing. I have found the best education is losing money. I hate it, it’s very motivating and very educational – but you have to be willing to do it. On the other hand my fear is that the deck is stacked against small investors. Just ordered this book by Peter Lynch yesterday: https://www.amazon.com/One-Up-Wall-Street-Already/dp/0743200403/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1516648766&sr=1-1&keywords=One+up+on+wall+street
I have quite a bit of knowledge relating to the business ramifications of patent/ trademark/ copyright issues – perhaps I can use it to my advantage (no insider trading, of course). After I finish the book I’ll figure out whether I want to give this all a try.
njtosdParticipantPoor Detroit.

I’m all for welcoming university grads and people with capital. What better way to bring wealth?
Maternity tourism was already sort of achieving that – rich couples coming to the US to have babies that would then be citizens when they turn 21 and bring over their family. If chain immigration is cut back, maternity tourism will probably die down and we won’t see as much of this. Maybe we should establish this as a legitimate alternative and have the money go to the US rather than the “brokers”. Take money now for citizenship granted 20 yrs. from now.
njtosdParticipant
trumps grave will need 24 hr security, i predict. people will dump buckets of feces for many years to come.
And what will that result in? Flowers.

But, yeah, there’s a backlash against intellectualism. Maybe if collgess didn’t emphasize coursework like “gender studies” education would be taken more seriously.Ahh the good ol’ days, when even the presidents we did not like were qualified, capable leaders who maintained the dignity of the office…
For once, we have some common ground, although I don’t think that the colleges are to blame. I can see it all around me – we live in Carmel Valley where there are 3 high schools. Two are public and therefore free (Torrey Pines, Canyon Crest) one is private and about $17,000 (Cathedral Catholic HS). The number of people from within the community who send their kids to Cathedral because they love the sports program or prefer Torrey Pines (again, because of the sports emphasis) is shocking. On the other hand, CCA, which has consistently higher test scores, a very accepting culture and all kinds of other things going for it is sort of chuckled at. In fact, the standard joke among TP and CCHS students is to call Canyon Crest “CC Gay” – which is a problem on a number of levels.
I had a friend years ago who worked for the Dept. of Ed under a grant to the National Center for Educational Leadership. They spent an enormous amount of time and money trying to identify factors that were predictive of someone being a good leader (not sure what the metrics were). At the time we discussed it, there didn’t seem to be any way to predict who would do well.
I see the problem as the extremists donating the most money and therefore choosing the candidates and conversely the candidates pandering to the extremists. Again, though, how do you fix it?

I heard a professor say China’s system actually elevates the most intelligent,
proven leaders.
Or it kills them, depending on the day.
