I decided that I was going to drop cable when we moved (which is coming in two weeks) but then Directv dropped the hammer with their current offer. Sunday ticket with redzone channel and mobile app access, all receivers free (99 bucks one time for whole home dvr), credits monthly for all sorts of nonsense).
Our current cox bill is 165 a month for hd cable (no movie channels), three hd boxes, long distance cable and internet.
Cable and internet in our new location will only run 40 a month first year, 50 a month second year.
Directv is 55 a month first year, 65 second 9 months then 80 the last three. Thats still cheaper than cox and I get the ticket.
The stickler for me is NFL and once I am a year in on Dtv, i will do the annual call, complain, cancel nonsense.
I hate paying for cable, but if its cheaper and I can still have it, im sold.

And I was ticked a few years back when my huge Mitsubishi Diamond Series projection TV crapped out at 4 years. I had to practically give it away for a few bucks because the repair cost was so high.
Yes, considering you can get a “ok” 42″ tv from costco around $500-600 (before any special coupons or rebates)
… and costco will warranty the TV (or any electronics for that matter) for 2 years (above the manufacturer warranty)….
and considering that an american technician/labor probably costs a minimum of $100/hr… Purely from a dollar perspective if you are not an audio/videophile and can settle for “good enough”….TV’s are a disposable item these days (environmental issues aside)…
This is exactly why Sony is having such a huge issue… Because once the holy grail of super quality TV’s, most people don’t give a crap anymore and will settle for “good enough”….Most people don’t care the fine distinction between your top of the line Samsung/Sony/LG or your crapper Vizio… And notwithstanding, it probably gives people an excuse to upgrade after 2 years anyway. And manufacturers (including Sony) no longer manufacture with quality/long lasting in mind. Because they want people to constantly upgrade anyway.
Same thing can be said for Digital SLR cameras. That’s why when you buy a digital SLR, spend good money on the lens, because those won’t depreciate. But the camera body will take a hit every year from now on…unless you get the the real pro version.
Monitor slickdeals and you can score a much better deal than a 42 inch 500 or 600 bucks.
There was a 47 3D LG for 499 two weeks ago. 55 inch 3d was 900 two weeks ago. Labor day is a great time to score a stellar deal.
does it come with a 2 year warranty?
I never buy a warranty from big box stores. Get one from square trade for cheap.
My first 42 inch (the first 1080P 42 inch available in the world in 2006) has been rock solid for 6 years. I never bought a warranty on it.
Do your homework, check the ratings on the TV and AVS forums for common issues (if they exist) based upon the model. Unless you are moving a TV around, you shouldnt have issues. Run sample images/ sample test to test for dead pixels and other things. If its broke, you will know immediately and can return it. If you are comfortable with doing your research before buying, shouldnt need a warranty. If you want a warranty, hit up costco for the extra warranty padding they offer.
I would rather invest my warranty dollars on appliances. Learned my lesson on a samsung built in microwave that crapped out at 18 months new.

LAAFTERHOURSParticipantThanks SDR. Off to another Firestorm state – Denver CO.
LAAFTERHOURSParticipant
Thanks for the additional information and that’s a nice gain! I’d call that significant appreciation in a few years. Just curious, where did you get all the mandatory disclosure forms you are legally required to provide?
Welcome and thanks! We are 2 for 2 in buying low selling high (bought in 04 in DC and sold in March 06 right before it tanked). It probably helps that we have bought homes that needed updating and that my wife has a past history of interior design (Tip – staging the home helps).
I pulled all the disclosures down off the web (it took a while to locate all of them). I used our previous sale documentation to give me an idea of what was needed as well as read up on what was recommended.
LAAFTERHOURSParticipant
Would you care to share some of the results of the Googling etc with the rest before you ‘ride into the sun’… but only to the horizon?? Ie..What someone who might be considering doing the same thing, either from purchase or sale side, would need to know and where the resources are at?
I took some notes from Treehugger but basically looked up required documents for california real estate transactions. Pulled a real estate purchase agreement form a legal website (rocketlawyer.com), also pulled the CAR purchase agreement document and made sure all bases were covered in the purchase agreement. Seller is responsible for natural hazard reports (payonline and in advance vs through escrow), wood destroying pest inspection (used antimite because they are free), Hoa transfer fees (if you have one) and I think thats it. Its up to you to determine what to pay in terms of closing but you can use zillow’s closing calculator to look at different ecrow companies to determine the costs associated with closing. Escrow really handles everything which helps.
LAAFTERHOURSParticipant
Ultra low inventory made that all possible. Just curious about one thing. December 2009 is widely referred to as the bottom of the down cycle in most indexes. How did your resale price compare to your purchase price?
Congrats and good luck in your next home!
Sold for 90K above purchase price. Homes in the neighborhood peaked in that timeframe at 120k above our purchase price. Peak for this subdivision was back in 2006, for double what we purchased the home for so we bought in at the bottom (there was only one home lower in this subdivision but it was a smaller home and beat up). This neighborhood had a lot of blood in the streets 07-09.
LAAFTERHOURSParticipantMy job is remote based from home and my wife has new work opportunities elsewhere so we are moving within a month out of the state.

People living in mariners landing area are selling and moving down the hill.
What grade level is that new school? Sad that some of the Kinders already get set off to La Costa Meadows.
Edit: never mind, found it’s a K-8. Still sucks how the width of 1 street would make such a difference tho.
Looks like K-8. Its too bad they didnt plan for an elementary school to be put in someplace around questhaven so kids could walk from up the hill.

LAAFTERHOURSParticipant
I thought about upgrading to windows 7 but I think its quicker, easier and better to just buy a new PC. This PC has been turned on for about 4 years and has rarely been shut down. The fan sounds tired and the power supply is probably quite geriatric also. I have no problem dropping $500 just to make my pain go away asap.
You can build a monster machine with 500. Or search for one on sale. Both could be found on Slickdeals.net

LAAFTERHOURSParticipant3 person 2800 sq ft home with 6 zone sprinkler system that runs 3 times a week for roughly 4-6 minutes depending upon the station. My bill is 80-85 a month and we live in Vallecitos water district.
LAAFTERHOURSParticipantMy home came with a 1 car and 2 car garage separate from one another. When we moved in, I dropped that spongy flooring in the 1 car garage, had cable wired in, mounted a 42 on the wall with a small ikea floating cabinet for the media stuff and put all the gym equipment in there. It was nice but super hot in the summer since it gets afternoon sun. Relocated all the gym equipment to the house and moved the 42 to the wall facing the street. Brought in a kegerator, dartboard and have the bikes, scooters, skateboards, baggo hanging from the ceiling and sports stuff in a bin. During football season, open the garage, turn up the stereo and watch the game from the street while keeping an eye on the young ones. Man cave? kind of but not really. More like a family cave with all the toys.
St pats day it came in handy. Dual beer pong tables and ncaa tourney going. It smelled and looked like a frat house sunday morning but nothing 2 hours of a mop and broom couldnt clean up.
