I sympathize with this from two perspectives – one, because barking dogs annoy me, and two, because I have a dog that has defied all bark-control attempts (and I have tried it all – the sonic things, shock collars, citronlla bark spray, spraying water in the dogs face myself).
I would try talking to her. Make sure she is aware that everyone around her is annoyed, and tell her that you will start reporting her. Assuming she is unapologetic (as it sounds like she will be), then do it. And check out the sonic thing someone else recommended in the meantime – it may not have worked for one of my dogs, but the other would bolt to the back of the house whenever either of them barked. I ended up turning it off because I felt like I was punishing my other, non-barking dog.

I did hate the drive in and out and the fact that it took at least 45 minutes to run to the grocery store for anything, so i have to disagree with those saying it is more accessible.
There’s a Vons and Trader Joe’s in Pt. Loma, as well as an organic market. We’re talking more like 5 min by car each way, no way it’s 45.
It was 15-20 minutes each way from where I lived (off of Sunset Cliffs) to the Vons/Trader Joes. Considering it’s about 4 miles, I don’t think anyone could make it there in 5 minutes. There are a lot of poorly-timed lights on Rosecrans, plus there are frequently a ridiculous number of cars/people you are dodging/fighting for spaces in the parking lot because of the massive church.
*edited to add – I agree with flu, we should stick to discussing places we have lived. And one of the major downfalls of living in Point Loma is dealing with the traffic in and out, especially the morning Naval Base traffic and the weekend church traffic.
jwizzleParticipantI lived in the part of OB/Point Loma that is down the point (ie the nice part with no airport noise) for 3 years. I loved the ocean views and our neighbors, who we used to speak with all the time (unlike where I live now in UC, where I still haven’t met 2/3rds of my neighbors after living there more than a year). I would have to disagree with the people saying there are no kids – we had at least 7 kids on our block, who would go outside and play baseball in the street, despite the massive hill. I did hate the drive in and out and the fact that it took at least 45 minutes to run to the grocery store for anything, so i have to disagree with those saying it is more accessible.
I think the OP should come here before making a decision. Since his/her business partner is in Coronado (and the plan is to have an office halfway in between), I don’t know how attractive living in North County would be. And going to a tiny CV lot would be tough after living on an acre. But there isn’t necessarily a lot in between that would seem desirable and in their price range.
jwizzleParticipant
My last visit for cleaning I had the full X-rays done and can you believe it, they found a crown that should be replaced, because you know “it is not a matter of if it will go bad but when!!! I am not going to do the crown.
As much as I agree with everyone else on dentists/upselling (which I also try my hardest to ignore), your dentist might be telling the truth about this one. My dad had a crown go bad and had to have a second root canal (I don’t even know how that was possible, since I thought they basically got rid of your tooth when they did a root canal). He was tried to ignore it for a month or two, since he figured he had a crown and clearly nothing could be wrong, but he was in incredible pain. And it was SUPER expensive to fix – much more so than just replacing the crown would have been.
jwizzleParticipant

flu – what high school was this? (I assume a LAUSD one?) They did this at my high school too, and I’m wondering if it is the same school (I lived in Lomita), or if they targeted a bunch of schools in the (LA) South Bay.
Would you believe… PV?
Well, you DID say only 4-5 were interested… But still, I am amazed. Doesn’t seem like a LA Sheriff target school. (My HS, in comparison, was more of a “target” school in that they were targeting future arrests, haha).

OT: Hi, jwizzle . . . Did you finally have your baby? If so, congratulations!
Nope, 2 more weeks until my due date (and then another 2 weeks until my dr would induce – he is old school in that way). I’m trying my hardest to evict her now, though!

That does not make me want to go back to Dinosaur Park. I knew there was a reason I was avoiding it…
Where in the park did you see the rattlesnake?
jwizzleParticipantI’m sure you can find someone cheaper. I don’t recall who did our tenting, but I remember that it was closer to $2500 to tent as opposed to $3800 for spot treatment and repairs that the seller’s termite co said was necessary. Also, I second BG rec that you do repairs yourself after having it tented. As I recall from my house purchase, for purposes of mortgage/financing, banks don’t care about repair work if you get it tented (I do believe that having it tented was a condition of closing for my loan, but that might have been because we got a VA loan).

Have you checked out the other parks with playgrounds in south UC? – there’s one on the west end – on Stresseman adjacent to the montesori school, and another on the east end, nicknamed “dinosaur park” – but technically knows as University City Gardens Park, at Governor and Gullstrand.
First, just wanted to say that I didn’t think you were knocking Standley park – I also think it’s ridiculous that agents put pictures in listings! I have been to “dinosaur park,” since we have friends with a kid about the same age as mine that live down there. Not recently though, so i’m thinking I should go back. How is parking over there? (i’ve only walked, but i’m super pregnant and not up to a 3+ mile walk right now). I’ve never been over to the park on Streeseman, which is a much shorter walk, so I might check that out soon.
April 16, 2012 at 11:33 AM in reply to: OT: Post your favorite pic of your town/neighborhood that you took. #741750jwizzleParticipantUCGal – you and I must live in the same neighborhood, since there WAS a shot (actually 2) of the play structures at Standley in the listing for the house I purchased last year. And yes, my first thought was a sarcastic ‘wow, there is a park in the neighborhood… I would never expect that in the suburbs.’ I’m speculating I would have found it even without a picture in the listing. That being said, with a toddler, I do go to the park a lot, so i’m glad it is there and it was a consideration in my purchase.
jwizzleParticipantI also rented the house next door to my landlord, and also was on my “best behavior” since we loved the house and were getting a fantastic deal for the area.
One thing you might want to consider (if you can make this happen) – he wanted us to see him as a our neighbor, rather than landlord (it was the kind of neighborhood where we interacted with our neighbors a lot – xmas gifts on porches and bbqs and stuff). He had us call his contractor friend, rather than him, when we had broken things. The contractor friend usually would be the one arranging to fix things or recommending a repair person anyways, so it made sense for everyone, and there was no barging next door when we needed something.
jwizzleParticipantI got a good recommendation here for someone who specializes in crown molding. He actually did my baseboards, so I can’t personally attest to crown, but he definitely did a good job on a very expedited timeframe. PM me for his details.
January 23, 2012 at 5:54 PM in reply to: OT: UCSD Medical Office: Hello, anyone there??????? #736630jwizzleParticipantBack in 2003, my primary dr was at UCSD. I once waited FOUR months to get an appointment for a knee issue. And then the Dr. canceled the day before because of a sick kid, and the appointment center wanted to make me wait another 2 1/2 months (I threw a giant fit about this, because I had quit my job, was relocating to LA to go back to school, and was losing benefits in 2 weeks).
While I was in LA, I had a potentially life-threatening (but luckily easily rectified) medical issue that resulted in being hospitalized at Cedars twice. My primary AND the ER doc over there called me weekly to check in and see how I was doing. The difference was night and day. Given the amount of time that has passed since I had a Dr at UCSD, I don’t think its funding cuts. I think that UCSD is poorly operated. Never going back.
