I’m not really up to date on Obama’s current definition of “rich”, but my best guess is $250K.
I have to say I’m confused by your concern about sustainability of income paired with buying a house to stem that. Unless you’re talking about paying (mostly) cash, that is. If you’ve been saving all that up while you’ve been renting, then good for you!
I got your point: We should never stretch ourselves thin to just live in a “dreamhouse”.
Bottom line, “if you could comfortablely afford the house, then ‘Good for you’ ;-)”IT.MOMParticipant
I’m not really up to date on Obama’s current definition of “rich”, but my best guess is $250K.

In the last few years our family anual income is over Obama’s standard for “rich”. But we rented condos which cost 1/5th of our monthly income. We were anxious about what if we couldn’t sustain our current income in the future? I feel miserable.
But I am feeling happy now with the house in the view.

in 2003. 42″ plasma TV costs $5000. I am not buying it, my regular TV still works fine for me.
in 2006. It costs $1600. I finally bought it and it improves my life quality significantly.
Now, it costs only $1000. But I don’t regret that I bought it 3 years ago. I enjoyed it for the last 3 years.IT.MOMParticipantCurious what home ownership has to do with enjoying living in the now?

I know that maybe it is not the best time to buy. But there will never be a “best time”.
I trust sky is not falling, and I should enjoy living in NOW.
Just do it!
