Funny thing about 2 year-olds: they’re mystically and irresistibly drawn to entertainment electronics. When my youngest was two, he broke our turntable, which forced us to go and invest in a CD player (which tells you how advanced in age I am).
We have a second home in a rural area to which we plan to retire (should that ever again be possible in our culture). We visit once or twice a month, and made a conscious decision not to get a dish. We’re doing a lot more reading, which we both love to do, when we’re down there. For whatever reason, when I’m back home, I’ll continue to sit and watch absolute crap when there’s nothing of value on cable. I mean shows like “Bridezillas” and “Housewives of OC” – real sludge at the bottom of the barrel stuff.
As for SN, i admire her skills, but it’s sooo obvious that most of the parents aren’t getting it at all. But i have to admit, the Daniels episode was really out there. I realize that they edit this stuff, but it was surreal. It was like Lisa had no clue where the kids were coming from, and was at a total loss as to what to do with them. Some psych grad student could develop a helluva PhD dissertation from a few months with that family. Actually, I’m surprised Lisa, in her quest to get her kids “noticed” (as per her mySpace page), has not signed them up for Dr. Phil yet. Or maybe she tried, and he just decided that she was beyond his skill set.
eavesdropperParticipantI think you’ve got the right idea, scaredycat. After I finished viewing the episode, I found myself kind of wishing I didn’t own a television. It really was disturbing.

eavesdropperParticipantScaredycat, they play several reruns of SN each day on the Style Channel (I think there are a couple other cable channels that are running SN also). I’m sure the Daniels episode will be on again within a few weeks. If I see it scheduled, I’ll post the date and time here.
It is compelling viewing. In actuality, aside from 8 year-old Alexus, the children appeared to be relatively good kids. Definitely not the typical demon seed featured on SN. The real issue appears to be that, while they seem to be quite skilled at procreation, Steve and Lisa are not nearly as adept at actual parenting. Steve got into the swing of things pretty quickly and really seemed to be working on improving his skills. But it was frightening to watch Lisa. There’s some serious pathology there. I’ve never witnessed a disconnect that extreme between a mother and her children.
As I mentioned, most of the kids appear to be fairly well-behaved, and they are truly beautiful children. But I cannot believe their future as well-adjusted adults is assured growing up in an environment like that.

eavesdropperParticipant“Then there is this ‘combo’.. of what I suspect is the sink in a washroom on top of a oak barrel?”
Ucodegen, I have to admit that the sight of that was disturbing. If Lisa’s trying for a spread in Architectural Digest, I fear that her hopes will be dashed.
