Seriously??? Petty shakedowns have been associated with Tijuana for decades, nothing new here. From my experience, they are a lot less common in recent years.
Does anybody else have real world experience with this? Would be interesting to know what others are experiencing.
Here’s a good old story of Baja:Back in the 80’s I was down in Ensenada camping on the beach at El Faro with a college friend. It was spring break and we were meeting a frat brother with his girlfriend at Hussongs. They got lost and went through Ensenada and headed south were they came upon a check point. Well the idiots were carrying mushrooms so they decided to down them all. Turns out the check point was for agriculture. We finally found them and brought them to the beach campsite. I sat the guy down and gave him his tent so he could put it up. We left him there and went to Hussongs. About 4 hours later we came back and he was sitting in the same spot and had done nothing. They were hallucinating for a day or two……..
desmondParticipant
See I’ve always said that I don’t think the risk of murder is the issue.
It’s just petty attempted shakedowns like this.
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/jun/01/tp-jailing-in-mexico-highlights-risks-for-tourists/
There are many American tourists that get hassled for bribes by the cops. And most of them never get (nor want) media attention. They just never go back down again.
I’d be curious how many people get targeted by the police for shakedowns.
There was only one person that made “White tourists, staying only a day or two, driving old cars with no criminal record being murdered in Baja” the issue.

Any mortgage brokers here, please feel free to correct me on this.
Ha, like you would listen,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just kidding………………
desmondParticipantThe subsidies for AG start at water and go all the way to advertising. I cannot think of a better way for the government to spend money that benefits all its citizens more with cheaper, plentiful food than ag subsidies. Nothing more basic than that.
desmondParticipant

The second culture/group might instead value free time, and not care at all about how their homes/neighborhoods look, nor care as much about crime because they feel that their freedoms might be curtailed if they focus too much on keeping crime rates down. They would probably NOT be willing to spend more money or work harder toward the same goals as those in the first group.
Does this “second culture” description reminds you of something? It reminds me of the gun culture of America.
KIBU: Now, for fun, let’s replace the word “gun” in “gun culture”, with “black” or “Hispanic”. How’s that sound?
Yeah, thought so. Nice to know that this sort of appalling ignorance is alive and well. You should really educate yourself before making such completely nonsensical comments.
Or not. Based on your earlier, and equally vapid, comments on guns, it appears you suffer from an unhealthy obsession with guns and their owners.
Thanks Allan, good reply.
desmondParticipantDown almost 5% today to $26.21. REIT? Anybody out there?
desmondParticipant
CA renter, IMHO your post is euphemism for racism.
The problem is not multiculturalism but economics.
We have to compare the differences between the USA and Europe. The big difference is economics.
Despite Europe’s progressive rhetorics, their state directed economies and heterogenous populations create a de facto good ol’ boys club where you have to be of the establishment to make it.
Few tourists ever see the ghetto suburbs where immigrants live in Europe. European city centers that tourists see is far from how immigrants live.
In America, immigrants thrive in commerce. They open up shops, revive neighborhoods and become their own bosses. Prime example is NYC where countless immigrants become millionaires as small business owners and landlords. After 5 years of residency they become full-fledged citizens. Very different in Europe.
America is better positioned for the 21st century global economy.
Flyerishigh…….You can see what you want to see, but you can’t tell others they are not seeing what they are seeing..
desmondParticipantdesmondParticipantThe homeowners in this article are geniuses?
Keep pretending this is a normal housing market. I am not pretending the stock market is normal…..
desmondParticipant
AGNC today just closed at $31.48. So, it’s up ~3% over the last month and a half and on top of that, they just paid out $1.25/share in dividend on 12/24. So that’s another 4% (if you’re comparing to the $30.50 price, which was where it was in late november). I bought some at $29, so, between dividend and stock price rising, it’s up ~13% over the last two months. Not too shabby for 2 months. They’re still paying out about 16% of dividend so far.
AGNC closed at $27.72 on Friday.
desmondParticipantOkay you can call me the short cut smoker. I smoked a Farmer John Spiral Cut pre-cooked ham yesterday for around 5 hours. So today, I just put it in the oven to get the temp up and it will be used for sandwiches. I have some Tyson Cooked Frozen Buffalo Wings, I’ll put them in the smoker for an hour or two. I can then spend time on the Kona Brewing Co. Variety Pack I have on ice. Have a great and safe Memorial Day/Weekend and I will have a couple cold ones to all the real smokers!
desmondParticipant“The truth is that next year, that $200 million to $250 million deficit is going to get harder to close,” Santana said.
http://www.dailynews.com/ci_21056662/los-angeles-not-going-bankrupt-like-other-california
In April, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana had raised the specter of Stockton’s bankruptcy as a warning that L.A. needs to do more to get its finances in order or risk the same fate. But on Wednesday, he also noted that Los Angeles has already taken some important steps to avoid that outcome.
desmondParticipant
If the guy is broke after 8 years in office, it means he wasn’t on the take.
Right, he just wasn’t smart enough to take the right things. It was more important for him to be “seen in L.A. today” than to worry about tomorrow. Same goes for the way he ran the city.desmondParticipant
Tsk tsk… that’s cheating.
I have found out that I can put more attention to drinking beer cooking this way……….oh yea and spending time with the wife…….
